I guess so but even though he hardly played I dont see anything saying he was supposed to be given a redshirt year for anything.
I've never heard of a player retroactively getting a RS just b/c he lost his starting job and couldn't get on the field.

you can redshirt at anytime. If he didn't play a conference game they can grant it also.

Of course, but was he supposed to be getting one for that year in the first place? Like he was told he was getting one and then they yanked it for no reason in a game?
Otherwise it seems like they are just trying to retroactively give him one purely b/c he wasn't good enough to start.
