If you like a guy who hasn't produced at MVP caliber level since 2006, then yeah I guess
Jason Stark said this morning that he's finished in the top 5 in MVP voting the last 4 years and is averaging like 50 homeruns and 140+ RBI.

His BA since 06 has been: .268, .251, .279, .265
Not great, but most people value OB% and SLG % more now.

he hovers around 200 SO's per year
Is a strikeout any worse than an F-8 or 6-3? When you produce like he does, you can get away with striking out and having a lower batting average.
But what some people aren't talking about is how this is a great marketing move, too. He's got a great smile with a big personality, he can be the face of the Phillies for the next 7 years. As good as Utley is, he doesn't seem to have much of a personality and is pretty quiet. And even if Howard's production falls off the last couple of years of his contract, he might going after some milestone homerun #s that will still put asses in seats.
This might be a big gamble, but the bigger gamble would be letting Pujols or Fielder set the market and having to compete with that. Having to pony up 30 million a year for longer than 5 years or just losing Howard all together would have been much worse.

large contract for someone who stunk it up in the finals, but oh well, A Rod has been gettting those kind of contracts for awhile now.

A large, but justified contract for someone who is the main reason he's team got to the finals. There are 14 teams in the NL who would gladly pay for what Ryan Howard has done and will do for the Phillies.

If another person refers to the World Series as the "finals," I may just fricking snap.

"I think the Saints got lucky in the NFL finals last year."

His babip isn't that far off of Pujols. Batting average is way overrated. I'm on my phone so I can't look up other stats to argue but yes definitely worth it.

His VORP is, an awesome #19 among first baseman.

Probably for defense? An area he's shown marked improvement over the last couple of years.

this was 2009, also my biggest problem is not paying him for what he has done in the past but for what he will do in the future.

Well, Howard didn't even make $1 million in 2007.
So, I guess they kinda owed him.

Yes, and more. He is a run producer, not a for average hitter. Stats can often be overrated, batting average is one, RBI is not one, Runs wins games, and Philadelphia has won a lot of games sense Ryan Howard has joined the team.
Sorry for the bump but this is just unbelievable. RBI's are, along with Wins, probably the most overrated stats in baseball. Howard is an excellent hitter but he has 143 RBI's because people in front of him are great at getting on base. Outside of the 47 RBI's he got from knocking himself on HRs, the other 96 are due to other people getting on base before he came up to hit.
And I like Howard, but this is a horrible contract if it started right now and even worse that it doesn't even start until he is 32. I guarantee that when he is only playing against RHPs at age 34 or 35 and still has 75 million dollars left to be paid, Phillies fans will not be so happy.
And for the person saying this was a better contract than Mauer's: Mauer is in the prime of his career for a large part of that contract, Howard will not be for any of his except year one. Mauer is great at a key defensive position, Howard is average at best at one of the two least important defensive positions (LF being the other). Even though catcher puts a strain on your bodu, the odds are that Mauer will be fine for a large part of the contract and the Twins can use the DH in his later years. Howard has a body type that tends to break down around his age. He is a hard worker but there is a real possibility you will see a decline from him before this contract even begins.
