Why would a manager keep a pitcher in long enough for them to rack up 9+ runs? 8 runs scored... nah, we're good. 9 runs scored... okay, that's where I draw the line.

Sometimes the pitcher just has to wear it to save the relievers. Just think...if he gets out of the inning and goes 3 or 4 innings that's a huge load off the bullpen.

First thing I thought of was Vin Mazzaro of the Royals.
Turns out he went a little more than 1 inning though.
quote:

He surrendered 14 runs in 2? innings in an emergency appearance out of the bullpen in a 19–1 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Kauffman Stadium on May 16, 2011.[5] Besides setting a new franchise record for most runs yielded in a game, he became the first pitcher in the modern era (since 1900) to allow that many without pitching 3 innings. His 14 earned runs given up was also the most by a relief pitcher since Les McCrabb of the Philadelphia Athletics allowed the same amount in four innings in a 19–4 defeat to the Boston Red Sox on April 16, 1942

Phil Humber of the Stros say's "Not so fast"

8 ER, 8 hits, 0 K, 1 Out, 30 pitches

Still the first inning.

I was coming on here to post about Phillip Humber. Went from having a perfect game last year to giving up 8 runs in less than an inning.

AND......

Philip Humber may have topped Porcello's performance tonight.

8ER 8H 1BB 0K 30 pitches 1 out

Obviously he beats Porcello considering he only gave up one less run while recording half as many outs. Also, he managed to give up eight runs on only thirty pitches. That's a special kind of suck only an Astros pitcher could achieve.

Didn't Fernado Tatis hit two Grand Slams off same pitcher in same inning? I want to say vs Dodgers.
