Three State Plan

California is set to vote on splitting the state into 3 separate states....California, Northern California and Southern California. That got me thinking, how would that impact current California Universities naming? For example...California would be located in the new "Northern California". USC would be located in "California" and not in the new "Southern California". The satellite campuses of California would be a mess. For example...UC Riverside would reside in "Southern California" Would it then become Southern California Riverside? Because of new governments and I'm assuming funding issues, would all of these schools be forced to rename their universities?

Don't know why they would have to rename them... theoretically they could all pool together to keep funding the same as it is now as well. Even if funding was to be split up they wouldn't have to change names.

I disagree Completely. For example, UC Riverside wouldn't be in the state of California then. What if the new state of Southern California funds their universities differently than the state of California does? Why would the state allow it to be connected to the state of California of which it just separated from? Also, why would you want to be called California, if you aren't even in the state of California? Makes no sense. Wouldn't you want to represent the state of Northern California instead?

Does this have any real chance of happening?

It sounds like from the people voting perspective it has little chances, but who knows. Being ratified by the US Government is another thing too. Something has to give in California. Its unsustainable. I am all for it.

Western Carolina University isn't in the state of West Carolina or just Carolina either but they don't give a shite.

It's just a name.

Do the voters of California have the authority to just add 2 new states to the U.S.? This seems extremely unlikely to pass through all the necessary channels.

The reason why Western Carolina is different is because there isn’t a state named Western Carolina?!?!?!? Now now if there was a state called Western Carolina and Western Carolina was still in North Carolina....don’t u think that’d be weird???

It wasn't me making the point about Western Carolina with you.

You've mistaken me with another poster.

Literally 0% chance that this would ever happen. And that's only because negative percentages aren't a thing.

Don't get me wrong, I like hypothetical discussions as much as the next guy, but this is just pure silliness. A waste of paper and ink and time and keystrokes and computer memory and whatever else you can think of.

The measure could pass by 100% of the vote in California and it would still have a 0% chance of ever happening. I state can't just make itself two (or three) states because that's what it wants to do.

Can’t Texas split into 5 states anytime they want to?

It won't happen. Even if 100% of the voting Californians approve the split, the feds have the final say. The last tine it happened was Virginia splitting, and that took a civil war.
