Hakeem is arguably the best defensive player in NBA history. His impact was immeasurable.

I've seen them already. Defensively Dream is ahead by a mile.

Offensively they are close stats wise, but Hakeem was more versatile.

#1 v #5 is not "a mile"

noobdy argues hakeem's defensive superiority

not really. shaq has a bigger gap in offensive stats than hakeem has over shaq in defensive stats

I love how people use Shaq's power and strength against him, yet Hakeem's versatility is praised.

Both qualities are assets. Who cares how you do it, its about putting the ball in the hoop. If Shaq can put the ball in the hoop more due to his power, than so be it. Why is it used against him when Hakeem's skills are being praised?

slowflowpro,

when the game was on the line, the rockets went to Olujawon (possession after possession).

the lakers instead put the ball in Kobe's hand and used Shaq on the high screen. that was the lakers 4th qtr "tight game" or "come from behind" offense. Shaq screening, so kobe can score or find (fox, horry, fisher, brian shaw, rice, etc.) for the three.

Mr. stat guy, 1000 more blocks and top ten in steals proves you are flat wrong.

Hack-a-Shaq proves Shaq was a late game liability.

AND we haven't even gotten into how many times Shaq-led teams got swept out of the playoffs.

Anybody want to guess the quote I posted? Who said it?

Shaq had the highest peak in the history of the NBA IMO. HO was one of the best centers ever though and was probably a more skilled basketball player then Shaq. Shaq was a freak in terms of size and agility though and that put him above everyone else in my book.

what does it say about Shaq when the "best defensive player in NBA history" cannot stop you?

people on this site hate physical talent and prefer guys who work hard to more talented players who may not work as hard (but are better/equal)

How was he supposed to "stop him" while scoring the bulk of the Rockets' points and leading a team of inferior talent to a sweep?

the talent gap is overstated

penny was better than anyone on the rockets not named hakeem, but nick anderson and derrick key were not great players

frick, nick anderson lost the series for the magic

grant was solid, but not some superstar

Hakeem and its not close. On Stats alone-More rebs, steals, defensive 1st teams, and he did it wearing Etonics and LaGear. Dream played the BEST teams, in the best period in NBA history. His early championship loss was to 86 Celtics, beating the Lakers to get there. His supporting cast Robert Reid, Allen Level, Lou Lloyd, Rodney McCray, injured Ralph Sampson was junk.

Due to league (over)expansion Shaq got to play in the beginning stage of WTF is this NBA. The east was terrible. Teams stopped running plays and refs fixed games to put TV markets in the finals.

There are so many more reasons. Hakeem holds a big man camp every year in Houston, that all of the young centers attend.

It's ok, you can just admit he couldnt stop him. No one could. No need to make stupid excuses.

btw several Rockets were huge in that Finals. Drexler, Horry, Mario Ellie, Same Cassell. How quickly people forget. To act like Hakeem put the team on his back offensively is a joke.
