The Army football rivalry with Notre Dame got so intense nationally, a decision was made to deemphasize football at West Point for national security reasons. It was believed it would be dangerous -over time- having half the country hating West Point.

The option offense started in the late 1960's, dumbass. That wasn't the "early days" of College Football.
