I'm not questioning judgement, an argument can be made about not applying the rule in the correct manner

Not ordinary and not immediately.

I disagree. Was not ordinary catch and not called immediately. Rule was not applied correctly.

I wish they would change it, but there is a .000000000001 percent chance. That's only because Bud Selig is in charge. It's not an incorrect application and here is why. Was there runners on at least first and second? Yes....In Sam Holbrook's judgement, the ball could be played by the SS with normal effort. So there is no interpretation of the rule. It was in the umpires' judgement that the call should be made. He made it. I think he was wrong.

The rule doesn't say immediate. When it becomes apparent to the umpire he then call it immediately.

When he made the called had no impact on the game.

Did I hear this right? The two hearing the protest are former Cards, prominent ones even, Torre and Garagiolla?

Whether he made his judgement call earlier wouldnt have changed anything. The batter would still have been out and the runners would still advance. If you think that the protest will be upheld and the game replayed, you are the idiot.

MLB TV just read straight from the rule book that a decision should be made immediately

Rule 2.00 (Infield Fly) Comment: On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder?not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire?s judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire?s judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately.

Bho, this is straight from the official rules page on MLB.com under infield fly rule

Thoughts?

I linked it earlier. It says earlier that "when it becomes apparent". I literally copy and pasted the whole section.

quote:

The umpire?s judgment must govern,

This is why there isn't any hope in the protest. They will ask the umpire and he will say that he made the call when the SS threw his arms out and in his judgement it was routine. I have taken many courses on baseball rules. I've been involved in protests, obviously not at major league level, but I was trying to provide you some insight on how they will interpret the call and what is and is not judgement.

NO IT DOESN'T. It says he must immediately call it ONCE IT BECOMES APPARENT THAT IT IS AN INFIELD FLY. Say they had to make it immediate, if the ball comes off the bat and 1 second later it is called, I could argue that it wasn't immediate, and win a protest.

Seriously, I'm not trying to be an a-hole here. The infield fly rule is the most common rule that fans don't understand. Every game I have ever coached in where an umpire calls this in the grass, there are 4 or 5 fans screaming that it was in the OF. I still think this call was bad and if I was Freddy, I would have been tossed and filed a protest as well. The worst that can happen is they say no.
