At some point the NCAA will have to come up with a playoff format that includes more teams. If not, players will continue to opt out of meaningless bowl games.

Except they are opting out of entire seasons, or midway through the season, not just meaningless bowl games.

As long as the game gets played the NCAA doesn't really care if players opt out of meaningless bowl games

There are like a couple dozen players that opt out of bowl games in an average year

Who really cares. Like you say they are meaningless anyways.

Ok, say it increased to 8. How do you convince players on the other 122 teams not to quit? The more teams you add to the playoffs, the more the rest of the bowls lose value, which is where most players will end up

The opting out trend is a result of the covid season. It's not gonna keep happening. Gms will take notice if you just quit after you feel you've earned a draft grade you wanted,Freshman and sophomores especially. You sit out like chase did ,in a normal year, will be the exception.

There is nothing NCAA can change its the NFL that needs to change

This is not going to be a common occurrence after this year, especially midway through a season

You clearly haven't been paying attention to who and when all these opt outs happen with.

Exactly. The NCAA can't forc ethese guys to play, the big name talent are only there to punch their NFL card, many of them dont' care about the teams, their teammates, their coaches, or the school. It's an audition for them and once they've got the job at the next level, they gone.

The NFL is their goal and thus only the NFL can stop this, they'd have to get creative but they could probably come up with some sort of incentive for players to remain, at least entire seasons.

If you're going to leave early, so be it, but don't quit midseason.

Not prepared to claim this will be a trend until it is. For now, I take it as an unfortunate anomaly of a Covid season
