Younger kids need to throw knuckle curve without the twist.

One of the greatest cons ever is convincing parents they need to pay thousands of dollars to kill their sons arms.
Pretty brilliant.

My hometown 11-12 year olds can’t throw curve balls. The league won’t allow it. If kids could learn a changeup early on and how to locate pitches, they’d last longer.

Braxton can throw 100 pitches with fastball, curve, slider, and knuckle ball.
No rest needed.

The first thing young pitchers need to learn is to throw their fastball for strikes. Everything flows from that.

Stephen Strasburg got hurt every year
Bad mechanics.
When Trevor Bauer got drafted, he told every team who interviewed him what his training regimen was, and he would not under any circumstances change it. He also showed them film of Strasburg and correctly predicted his future injury issues.

Friends, what is everyone's theory as to why there so many pitchers in the MLB and even college that are getting injured at a high level? I read a book about Nolan Ryan, and he specifically said the reason for his success was recovery after games, and staying fit between starts. He also said kids nowadays are throwing way too much at 12 and 13 with undeveloped arms. Especially a 9th grader throwing curves , etc and travel ball ruins more than it fundamentally helps. Ryan said he didn't start throwing breaking balls until he was 16 or 17. I am curious to what everyone thinks.
1) curve balls are easier on the elbow that fastballs
2) over use is a big issue in youth but a bigger issue is under prepared for the demands of the game. What i mean by that is, kids now a days want to shut down until practice starts...so 2 weeks and then boom...you are in competition and competition tends to cause them to throw as hard as they can. well they are underprepared for that as they failed to do a proper on ramp. even happens in the mlb and its why you see a huge injury spike at the start of the season
3) most pitchers not in mlb or big time D1 are severly under muscled. they because of the lack of muscle and strength they are placing way too much stress on the ligaments.
there are other reason but most happen because they have bad er/ir strength balance, they chase advanced programming instead of the lowest hanging fruit, they fail to take recovery seriously and they fail in the weight room/kitchen.....yet they are trying to throw hard
i didnt read whole thread but there will be idiots blaming weighted balls(which actually force less elbow valgus stress), there will be blaming of curveballs, again less stress, there will be those that blame strength training, all idiots who have zero clue and only repeating what they have heard instead of doing actual research
bottomline though is the demands of the game now require velocity, elite velocity....that requires risk
and if anyone brings up greg maddux....stfu....he threw 96 and will tell you only reason he got a shot was because of velo. and pitchers arent getting calls in other batters box now, cant use scuffed balls, and cant use sticky stuff. stfu, it was so easy, everyone would be greg maddox but there has only been one and zero similar to him since he retired.

I think it is chasing velocity and spin rate.
I don’t buy the “kids throw too much” angle because I remember playing ball in the 90s and the same guys were throwing all of the time. Arm management at the amateur level is as good as it has ever been.
you are correct and so are others talking about long toss, its a lost art.
velo should come from long toss, lifting and throwing medicine balls first. then move to more advanced methods like weighted balls as you advance but long toss should be the base imo along with properly designed strength program.
but you brought up spin rate....this is a huge huge thing. Believe or not we are seeing injuries from pitch design due to putting more pressure with one finger over the other.
the other thing people need to understand is the game has changed. you are expected to go 100% from the start and they will bring in relief as needed. but they do not want you starting 80% and slowly working up...its 100% from pitch 1 period. That is very hard on the arm

Can’t use Ryan??? Ok how about all the other pitchers even in the 80’s and 90’s that would go 8 or 9 innings every start.

because that isnt valued anymore.
1) the hitters are way better now a days on average and seeing a guy 3 times usually allows them to get hits. the % show this too
2) pitchers have a much smaller zone than the 80s/90s. and hitters actually work on pitch selection now.
3) you are expected to throw 100% from the start, not 80% and ramping. why? because the stats show that is the best way to get outs.
bottomline is the game has changed from what even I grew up watching PJ. it sure as frick has changed since you started watching. Just like it had changed in your fathers lifetime.
embrace the changes and quit being a "back in my day" dumbass.
sorry but nobody is getting the strike zone Maddux, Pedro, etc got.
