Yahoo Sports spoke to more than a dozen stakeholders Monday on every side of the playoff decision – university officials, athletic directors, media executives and others around college sports. Amid those conversations, a surprise emerged — officials on campuses, in conference offices and in the television world have expressed an openness toward a 12-team playoff as the most likely result.

While it’s unfair to say momentum has built toward a 12-team playoff before models have been presented to the commissioners or presidents, the 12-team model has emerged as the favored outcome over the eight-team playoff within the industry.

“The reason that you go to 12 is because you can develop the road of least resistance toward a good result,” said a high-ranking college official with knowledge of the process.

If they absolutely HAVE to expand, I do like the idea of byes to keep the regular season as relevant as possible. But those monster November upsets would lose so much of their significance. Pitt upsetting West Virginia, Iowa State upsetting Oklahoma State, etc. basically wont matter

Thumbs down on that. I suspect it will be unpopular, but, really, even in the most competitive year there are 3 teams with even a reasonable chance at winning the title. It is why Oklahoma, for instance, gets waxed in its game every year. All this does is beat down the dominant teams, and probably shortens the season of the team you actually care about. I'll take an extra game (12 game schedule) from my favorite team rather than watching Fresno get crushed by Alabama in a game that is all injury risk for Alabama.

Way too many

Would make regular season much less important

On any given year there are no more than 3 teams really deserving

lol at OU and Notre Dame continuing to get in

Final rankings from last season would have the following games
Round 1:
(1) Bama BYE
(2) Clemson BYE
(3) Ohio State BYE
(4) ND BYE

(5) A&M v (12) Coastal Carolina
(6) OU v (11)Indiana
(7) UF v (10) Iowa State
(8) Cincy v (9) UGA

Round 2:
(1) Bama v (9) UGA
(2) Clem v (7) UF
(3) OSU v (6) OU
(4) ND v (5) A&M

The only game worth a shite in Round 1.

(8) Cincy v (9) UGA

**Changed due to top 4 teams needing bye week for math to work

May as well make it 64 and render the regular season all but irrelevant like basketball. Apparently that's what they want

It wouldn't be a format like that, though. With 12 teams, you have to have byes for four of them to make the math work out.

It would ruin the sport as we know it.

People can laugh, but it's the truth.

Would also finish off what little prestige is left with the new year's bowls. Which sounds good to me. Players have already had enough.

2-3 years of an all SEC final four and this idea would be scrapped.

Expanding the playoffs is the Space Balls 2: The Search for More Money of the sport. There is no reason to do it from a competitive balance or interest perspective. Just a naked money grab so we can watch some G5 team play some average P5 team for the right to get embarrassed by the Clemsons or Ohio States of the world.

They need to get that this is not basketball, and injuries will rise drastically. Max it 8 tbh, 5 P5 automatic bids and 1 G5 auto bid with the rest battling it out.

I've been arguing for years to keep the playoffs at 4 but choose the teams after the bowl games. Creates an intense OOC game and keeps the integrity of the bowl system.
