But, a lot of these guys are able to heal and 100% recover from significant injuries that would frick us up way faster and better than we regular folks could handle.

Recovery science, not PEDS, is the biggest difference IMO. Pro athletes and non athletes have always had good diet and exercise options. Now they have are doing all sorts of recovery things.
When I stick to my contrast therapy after exercising I feel immeasurably better. 20 minute sauna, 15 minute ice bath.
Fewer processed foods helps too.

Works pretty well for hangovers too.
