If you wanted to have surprise onside kicks you would have to go back to the former kickoffs.

I don’t get it. Undeclared onside kicks are extremely rare in the nfl and is a major gamble a coach can take. Why the frick would you ban it?

They didn’t ban it because of the play itself, and they didn’t really “ban” it- it just naturally has no place with the current kickoff rules.

It simply is impossible to not have to declare an onside kick with the new rules

With the new kickoff rules, the receiving team is further back from the kick and cannot move until the ball is kicked, so logically doing a suprise, or frankly any onside kick from this formation is an impracticality

The reason you aren’t allowed to surprise onside kick, is because if you did a surprise onside kick with the current version of a traditional kickoff - the receiving team would have zero chance of recovering the football.

I guess there will never be an onside kick again like the one Sean Payton did in the Super Bowl to start the 2nd half

That's true but it doesn't explain the other changes. Why restrict to 4rh quarter only? Why only when trailing?

Given those are like 99% of kicks it's not impactful but why make it a written rule? If I want to onsides in the 3rd quarter in a tie game why can't I? Just silly to make artificial restrictions.
