The AFL wins the Super Bowl for the first time.
The NY Jets defeat the Baltimore Colts 16-7, despite being 17-point underdogs. Matt Snell ran for 120 yards and the Jets only TD, while Jim Turner kicked three FGs.
Oh, yeah, some guy named Joe Namath called a pretty good game.

I sure do.

Namath, Snell, Maynard, Sauer, and of course Weeb Eubank.

Those were good times.

I remember it. 1st Super Bowl I ever watched. I was pissed because Earl Morrall started for an injured Johnny U. Then they ran Johnny U out there after it was too late

Like everyone else who wasn't a Jets fan and probably half of the jets fans.

It's amazing all of the AFL teams ended up as NFL franchises after the former league folded. I was actually kind of surprised that none of the old USFL teams didn't find their way into the NFL when that league folded.

Boston Patriots - now New England Patriots
Buffalo Bills
Houston Oilers - now Tennessee Titans
Miami Dolphins
New York Jets
Kansas City Chiefs
Cincinnati Bengals
Oakland Raiders - now Las Vegas Raiders after stints in Los Angeles and Oakland
Los Angeles Chargers - now back in LA after years in San Diego
Denver Broncos

Dude was a beast.

This guy was also on the '69 Jets:

His claim to fame was steamrolling the Miami Dolphins in the '83 Super Bowl.

This is what Trump tried to force when he cajoled the owners to going to a Fall schedule.

Loved the guy as president, but still can't forgive him for killing the USFL.

I always found this compelling

Hope this isn’t true - but seems like a reasonable theory

Bubba Smith and Mike Curtis were forever salty and even refused to ever wear their 1970 SB rings.

There's that famous clip of Jimmy Orr running wide open down the middle of the field for an easy TD before the half down 7-0...

Instead of throwing to a wide-open Jimmy Orr...there was not a defender within 20 yards of Orr...but somehow, Morrall missed the certain touchdown...

...what builds the case for the conspiracy theory is that in fact, the pass was intended to be thrown to Orr in the first place...But he throws an Int instead... Ending the half.

Players didn't get paid a lot back then. Its possible there are far more sports fixing scandals back then besides the infamous Black Sox scandal.

quote:

A lot of people talk about that game. They talk about Joe Namath, obviously. But they also talk about the game possibly being fixed? Were some players on the take? Do you feel your team just wasn’t up that day? Were the Jets that good?

No. The Jets were not that good….Something was happening and I didn’t know what it was. We were inside the 20 five times in the first half and came away with no points. That’s not characteristic of the Colts. You understand what I’m saying?

The Jets were so "not that good" Namath didn't attempt a pass in the fourth quarter
