host of the coldest outdoor Super Bowl in Super Bowl VI.

SB IX was somewhat cold, but was also drizzly, overcast, and miserable. It was supposed to be played in the Dome but the Dome wasn't quite finished. The first game played in the Dome was a preseason game against the Dolphins the following August that I attended. Most people didn't give a crap about the game. Most were just there to see and explore the Dome.

I attended the 58 LSU 62 zip rout of the Greenies as a senior in high school. Unfortunately, also attended the Jan 1, 1960 Sugar Bowl - where Ole Miss put a beating on Cannon and Company.

I attended the pre-Saints NFL double header exhibition game there when it rained like a son-a-bitch.

Attended the first ever Saints regular season game against the Rams when John Gilliam ran the opening kickoff back for a TD.

Many fond memories at the old Sugar Bowl Stadium.

It was a truly great old stadium.

It should still be there, screw what some pseudo eggheads wanted.

I've been in it a jillion times. Sugar Bowls, Tulane games, Saints games, Super bowls IV and VI, and a ZZTop concert where a riot broke out. I was there for John Gilliam's kickoff return and I was there when the cannon guy shot off his hand at halftime.

I grew up in the neighborhood and as a kid a bunch of us would ride our bikes there to play football on the practice field mostly but occasionally the stadium would be unlocked and we'd play in there.

As a Boy Scout I ushered Tulane games. As a delinquent teenager I would climb up the light towers to smoke weed on a platform they had up there at the top. That had to be about 70-80 feet up in the air. One time two of us in one light tower had a bottle-rocket fight with two friends in the next tower over.

I saved a few bricks as souvenirs when they tore it down but I have no idea what happened to them.

More about the cannon guy, please.

Did he really shoot off his hand?

Yes. I don't remember the year but during a Saints halftime show there were two old cannons in the South end zone, one in each corner. I don't remember how many times they fired. It could have been once but I'm pretty sure it was when reloading the second time that the western gun fired before the guy with the ramrod was finished and the ramrod (with this guy's hand and part of his lower arm attached to it) flew to about the opposing twenty-five yard line.
Everybody was in disbelief. Like "Did that really just happen?"

I have seen many games there. I saw every Saints game played there, every Super Bowl played there, every LSU-Tulane game since the mid 1960's, numerous Sugar Bowlsas well as many other games. An 80,000 seat stadium was huge at that time. It had no frills whatsoever but it did have character. It had zero parking. I hated to see it torn down but I guess it outlived its usefulness.

Here are a couple of videos --

Tulane Stadium #1

Tulane Stadium #2

The movie "Number One" has some good shot of the stadium, including shots in and right outside the old locker rooms. It also has a few shots in and right outside the old training facility off David Drive.

wasn't that for a battle of new orleans tribute?

I remember the Rocket Man used to open the Saints games flying from one goal post to the other.
I’ve always wondered why that technology hasn’t improved over the last 50+ years !

When I was really young, maybe pre teen, the Cub Scout Den that I was in would go to the Tulane - Ole Miss game every year. Don’t know if someone would donate tickets or what.
Way too young to even think about that.
I remember it was big (of course we were kids then) and the hedges all the way around.

Saw JC beat White Castle in football playoffs. If I remember correctly lots of the medal stairs and stuff were condemned and most of the stadium blocked off. Around '76 I think.

For 3 years straight, I went with my park football team.

As I recall, it was something like $3 per kid and you got a ticket, a hot dog, and a drink. While the seats were typically in the upper deck, they weren't bad as we usually sat in the first 2-3 rows.

I also remember that the popcorn holders sold in the stadium doubled as a "megaphone" when you got finished eating the popcorn.

Back then, an aunt lived on Freret Street, just off the corner of Palmer, so we always had a great spot to park for events.

My grandfather had season tickets, so I went to many Saints games there. We were on the 30 yard line, visitor's side underneath the upper deck. Whenever the crowd would stomp their feet, we'd make sure to cover our drinks, so that the falling rust didn't get into them.

As I've mentioned in other threads, we had one rule if you went with paw-paw to the games. You stayed to the end, no matter how bad the game or the weather got. We went to the 1973 season opener against the Falcons. (Yes the 62-7 debacle.) There were 80,000+ at kickoff, maybe 5,000 at game's end...but we were there. After both teams cleared the field, Tulane came out to practice...and the few fans still left gave them a bigger cheer than the Saints got all day. Stories circulated after the game that someone called in a bomb threat to the Saints' locker room. Supposedly, the person who answered said, "we'll investigate if it goes off."

The last few years, they played some high school games in it but the upper deck was blocked off. Much of the stadium was in pretty bad shape by then.

This is a highlight film of the Saints' 1967 season. Many great Tulane Stadium shots here. Enjoy. LINK

Yes...

I was a kid going to Saints games.. If it rained the night before, you got a wet arse from the wooden bleachers..

That had to bring in Port O Lets for the Saints games because the bathrooms were worse than Tiger Stadium's...
