Pretty sure if the obstruction is moveable, you have to move it. You get a drop from immoveable obstructions, like grandstands. I haven't read the rules in a while either though.
Yea I thought you can. I awarded someone a drop from a tractor once. We couldnt find the keys.

Its moveable at first thought though. Rules in golf are so fine.

Doesn't matter, can't move it so you're awarded a free drop, through the green, provided the ball is not in a hazard.
If you could find the keys and move the tractor, the ball must be played as it lies provided it wasn't in or on the tractor.

Loose Impediments
"Loose impediments" are natural objects including:
· stones, leaves, twigs, branches and the like,
· dung, and
· worms, insects and the like, and the casts and heaps made by them,
provided they are not:
· fixed or growing,
· solidly embedded, or
· adhering to the ball.
So, if there's a gecko adhering to your ball, you can't remove it?

If you and I were playing for $, and your ball went OB, you'd be going back to the tee; I don't care who you were pissing off.
If it were obviously gone from the tee? Sure. But if we drove up to it and found that it was or knew the ball had rolled off?? I am not going back to the tee. Especially on a busy day. If you and I had to engage in fist-a-cuffs so be it.

People that mark, line up, walk around the green and look at 1 foot putts, and go back to the tee to hit another ball on busy weekend days on public courses are assholes. No one wants to wait behind your group and not get to finish a round because ur breaking out the Usga rule book every other shot.
If I was waiting to tee off and u can back to the tee to hit another ball after searching for it for 5 minutes I'd tell you to gfy.

Animals that have moved or are touching your ball is a completely different rule.

Should hit a provisional. If I lose my ball just in the rough and there's a group behind, I'll drop and hit 4 from that spot.

yea we usually do, but sometimes u see it go in rough and then cant find it

I like to play 'em down and putt 'em out. That's how we play in our group. We had one guy kicked out for cheating -- calling wrong scores; moving the ball; "finding" his ball.
But in a friendly game, there's nothing more annoying that watching someone plumb-bob a 2 foot putt for triple bogey.
