Tennis’ point system is soooo archaic. To think that Rafa could drop to number 2 after winning 5 of the last 6 slams is borderline asinine.
It doesn't have a season, though year end number 1 is something, so Nadal is defending the points of winning this tournament. The ranking system works just fine. You have to do at least as well as you did last year to stay where are rankings wise. I like it. Defend your points or they are bye bye.

Personally I’m of the mindset that almost all point weight should be from Slams. Sure this will diminish non-slam events, but whatever. There’s too many of them anyways and it makes the year too grueling on players. Also, they could still count some just not as much as they currently do.
Also, I see some merit to having to defend your title to keep points, but even if Rafa does defend his Wimbledon title he’ll still drop to number 2 if it’s against Djokovic right? That’s just dumb.

The other tournaments are cool, the 1000's. I think when all of the top guys show up they are harder to win than a Slam. To win one you'll likely have to go through 3 top players if you are not one. Historically you didn't get the same effort from the top players (1-4), but this new crop of guys sure do win a lot.
Djokovic won forty something matches in a row, beating Nadal and Federer 3 or 4 times each. He deserves it.

I mean he did lose to Djokovic in 4 Masters series finals this year, its not like him dropping is unwarranted.

Agreed. The Masters tournaments are as hard as any feat in sports. They still don’t carry anywhere near the weight or prestige that the Slams do. Djokovic is playing exception right now, but to drop Rafa to number 2 because of Djokovic’s dominance outside of Slams when the only thing anyone in tennis cares about is Slams is a little ridiculous.
What do I know though? The women’s number one just lost at a Slam again to further support her claim as the least warranted top player in sports shitory.

How many non-Slam wins do Laver, Borg, Becker, McEnroe, Sampras, Federer, etc have? No one gives a fvck about non-Slam wins.

Womens #1 is GONE.

No doubt. Nadal's 10 is unreal so far.
Ranking is a big damn deal right now since whoever is number 2 has Federer on their side of the draw. Federer then Nadal is a serious draw for Djokovic to win, but all that changes if you get Federer to play Nadal before you have to see him. Serious business for the US Open (if Djokovic wants to win it).

so rankings should be based exclusively on slams...
its not even plausible, you gain points and move up; this totally fricks anyone playing Futures and Challengers
youre basically ignoring everyone outside of the top 150
eta: I get your point, but its not like anyone disputes Nadal is the best player in the world

Hopefully Delpo isn't disappointing. He had never been past the second round at Wimbledon prior to this year

See that’s the problem. I understand the merit of points for individuals outside the top 150, but maybe there needs to be multiple point systems? I don’t know. All I know is if everyone acknowledges that Raa is the best player then the point system is a shitty system if it doesn’t reflect that. Make sense?

I'm not watching, but it seems like Delpo is repeatedly getting into trouble on his serve. I'm guessing Nadal is dominating the rallies?
