edited for clearer pic of Lauren
They were just changing the course when we played. Had white paint outlining fairways. The shrubs were small in waste areas.

I got some coctail napkins from the 99 open never opened. Maybe this weekend. Toast one to Payne.

**Official U.S.Open Thread (Return to Pinehurst #2)**
Love the return to the original design.
We had the USGA Southeastern Agronomist talk to us this spring during class. He will be the lead Agronomist at the back-to-back US Opens at Pinehurst. He spent some time talking about the challenges and plans for the men's and women's open.
Personally, I think it'll go fine, but probably won't become a regular thing.
which is ok ... i would guess the inclusion of the 'old' pinehurst kind of got the usga to thinking about non-traditional venues, non-traditional being anything other than long, narrow, high rough everywhere ...

Merion wasn't very traditional either. Before the tournament, all they could talk about was how short the course was compared to other venues.
I'm a fan of something different. I love the "rough" areas now. Wire grass and sand. Sounds like it's a very compact sand so if the players have a clean lie, you'll be able to see some spectacular recovery shots. But if it's caught up in a wire grass plant or obstructed some how, it's gonna be some normal US Open ugly rough shots.

People are saying it looks bad in HD.
Same thing was said about TPC La.

NBC HD is gonna be more worried about making Jordan Spieth's eyes extra blue and teeth extra white than being worried about messing with contrast that makes greens look dead on TV.
I remember Muirfeld last year looked brown and yellow because it was playing so fast and firm, but somehow since it was a course in over and a links course it was okay to be that color.
Function > aesthetics when it comes to how courses look for tournaments (or even for non-tournaments, just in general).*
*Excluding Augusta National for the Masters. They will do whatever they need to do to make that place lush and green come April.
