Im a newb at this (can you be a newb if you havent started?) but have always been intrigued by sports betting

What happens on moved lines? If i bet on something at that line and the line changes, does my bet stand? Stuck with my bet at the new line?

3 weeks early?? There's a lot of shot that will occur between now and then. Lines could move several points before kick off both ways due to injuries, suspended players due to bar fights/ failed drug tests/ accepting money for autographs/ etc, weather could play a role in Week 1 games, etc. Too early for me to play anything.

Look at the lines I have gotten.

UNLV +17, it is now UNLV +14
Rice +28.5, now +27.5
UL Lafayette +14, now +11

Lots of value to be had by betting early.

Besides, lines didn't really move much last year from early August to kickoff. I still have a card from Cantor dated August 9 and lines hardly changed at all at closing. Biggest difference was probably Washington State going from +14 to +11 against BYU but it didn't matter they still got blown out.

Any advice on how to get better at betting? In my little betting experience I tend to just pick teams based off names. Have a bookie this year and would like to take more action then just season long LSU bets and individual LSU games.

Last year we started the thread 2.5 weeks early. I'm going out of town this week so I wanted to start this before I left.

Don't try to pick winners, pick value instead. By value I mean playing lines that you believe are off and have "value". I.E. if you project that LSU should win by 10 and the line is LSU -7, that means there is 3 points of perceived value on LSU.

If you just try to pick winners instead of looking at value the juice will grind you down in the long run.

Keep in mind though that the most value is in the first 3 weeks because in week 1, the teams are unknown so "name" teams will get more credit from the line makers. In week 2, a lot of lines are over-reactions from week 1 performances. And in week 3, a lot of lines are re-adjustments from the week 2 over reactions.

Handicap the games yourself before you look at the actual lines. This is the single most valuable thing I do. Not only does it help you learn a lot about what bookmakers are thinking when they set lines, but it also (for me at least) serves as a guidepost for which games to take. Basically, when my spreads differ substantially from the actual spreads, i take the game. This approach helps keep me disciplined.

But also don't be afraid to ignore everything he just wrote and toss down the fricking farm on a moneyline.

I have a guy that I bet with and he doesn't take action until the week of, and so I haven't put in any plays yet. But my 2013 CFB gambling campaign will be beginning on Thursday August 29th when the Rebels of Ole Miss take on the Commodores of Vanderbilt.

I'll be taking Ole Miss at both the spread of -3 and the moneyline of -145. And even if those numbers shift a little bit between now and then, they're not likely to be shifting so much that I won't play them.

I am on Vandy. They covered last year against South Carolina in the same situation and I am not buying the Ole Miss hype. Give me the points for the home team
