He's great for tennis. He's got loads of talent, and he takes interview candor to levels so far unforeseen.

I was really getting pissed to see who’s in the Top 100. There are some guys who I don’t know who they are. Some guys, I’m sorry–with respect–they can’t play tennis. I don’t know how they got into the Top 100. I think I’m much better than them. It’s a motivation.

Nothing worked today. I was just running like a Spanish clay court player standing on the baseline and pushing the ball back. Women’s tennis.
quote:
I’m really happy that I didn’t choke in the end, as usual. I’m very well-known for mental strength. Ask around. Watch my previous matches

I don't like practicing. I really hate practicing.

This referee - his only purpose in life is to give somebody warnings. He is like a police officer; when they see a car they stop it and they have so much fun to give you a ticket. In Latvia, I stop where you cannot stop and they have a smile on their face as they give me a ticket. Same with this guy
And there are literally hundreds more I could post. Gulbis is cool.

Sock is the most talented of the young Americans, but it hasn't yet translated into consistent results. He's sorta all over the place. But I'd love to see him make a run.
Cool, I will keep an eye on him. It has been pretty slim pickings among American men for a while. Blake and Fish are clearly on the tail ends of their careers. Querry and Isner have some time left but just don't seem like they are going to have a major breakthrough.

Gulbis and Monfils in a tight one.

Gulbis needs to chop down these unforced errors he's killing himself

I feel like ESPN usually gives the French Open more coverage than this?
Is it just because it's so early?

its kindof pissing me off that espn is not giving much coverage
usually like espn's tennis coverage

I've seen ESPN include highlights on Serena, Rafa and Fed so far. I wouldn't expect much coverage except for the most popular players this early in the tourney.
I think casual fans usu don't pay attention until the quarters, or the first weekend at the earliest.

They do a really good job with the Aussie. I don't know what's going on with this mess. Hopefully they'll step up their game.

He showed his mental toughness in the fourth set.
That was sarcasm.*

I like him too, I also get a kick out of how deliberate and rigid some of his strokes are.

5-29 FO Recap:
Sort of a boring, run-of-the-mill day. No real surprises.
The Aussie kid who just turned 18 got his arse handed to him by Cilic. This was to be expected, but still keep a lookout for this. Nick Kyrgios. He's legit.
No country has more stratification among it's professional tennis players than Spain. Rafa will beat the living dogshit out of every other Spaniard including Ferrer. Ferrer will beat the dogshit out of every Spaniard save Nadal. And down the line you can go. It should surprise no one that Ferrer beat Montanes 2, 1, 3 while playing the entire match with his cock hanging out of his zipper and his shoes on the wrong feet.
Tipsarevic beating the frick out of Mahut speaks more to the reality that Mahut should retire than to Tipsarevic being good at tennis. Tipsarevic has been miserably bad all year, and I have no reason to believe that he's returned to top form. He'll get worked by a decent opponent.
Giles Simon won with a scoreline you don't see very often: 6-7, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Nice work, Giles.
After a tough first three sets, Monfils cruised in the fourth while Gulbis unraveled.
Sam Querrey rolls in straights to get to the third round. But doesn't he do that in every tournament? Has Sam Querrey ever lost in a round other than the fourth?
Federer rolled easy breezy. Federer has a unique skill. He can beat the frick out of lesser opponents much much much more convincingly than other elite players. This has been true all throughout the long Autumn of Roger Federer. He hasn't been the best tennis player on the planet since 2007, but he never stopped being the best at beating the frick out of journeyman opponents and making his fans think the Federer of old is back. The Federer of old is not back. It's just that when Roger Federer plays the Somdev Devaarman's of the world, he wins 2, 1, 1. It's just what he does.
The remaining matches have gone unmentioned because they are unmentionable. I mean, do you really wanna hear about Victor Troicki's five setter? Didn't think so.

Great recap. I laughed. I've noticed that too about the Spaniards like have some sort of pecking order that they never deviate from.

I heard they get mercilessly beaten with a cat of nine tails for three or four hours if they disrupt the established order. But I'm no expert on Spanish law. Might just be a rumor.

I bet that was an entertaining match. I like watching Monfils play. Maybe I can catch some of that somewhere.

Full credit to bobbyray. I really wanted to see some side court matches, because they are so up close and personal. His info in this thread and a fluke set of circumstances (Court 7 being near where were we entered the grounds, and only having to wait ten minutes to get into the stands) led me to starting the day with Kyrgios against wiley Cilic. The quality of play was awful, but I think Kyrgios was hurt (he called for the trainer just as I got there early in the second set). It was fun to see up close, though.
After lunch, we stumbled onto Roger and Mofeeeeees on the practice court.
We then caught a little bit of dyke dubs, Schiavone and Stosur. It's wild to see that manchild and 38 pounder playing together. As we walked off that court, I ran into and chatted with ND's basketball coach, Mike Brey. Just a really cool guy.
Nice of Babolat to open up to the public the "RG lab" stringing room. They have a screen showing every job in progress, and if you wait a few minutes, you can see some random coach or relative do the dropoff and order placement.
Milos had a tough four setter against Llodra on our court, which was fun to watch because they are both very aggressive (Llodra is a great net player and the crowd was going insane for him).
We then got a full match of Roger, albeit a short one. What more can you ask for? His disguise on those drop shots is what jumped out at me. He must have hit 30 of them today. Also, Fed's game is just so clean compared to the errorfests I saw early in the day, even with his backhand shanks. Kyrgios and Cilic struggled to achieve more than a four shot rally, and Milos' backhand and movement can be downright embarrassing at times.
After some shopping,we caught the last half set of Ivanovic's match. Her little light grunt is so hot. She wrapped it up just as the sun went down and the rain came. Just a perfect day.
We are scheduled to see Stosur, Novak, Maria, and Gasquet tomorrow, but I think rain will wreak havoc with everything. It doesn't matter, though, because everything after this point is gravy. The weather gods gave me all I could have asked for today.
Pics to come next week when I get home.
