Now that every college basketball player has made a preliminary decision

...it's easier to talk about the best college basketball teams in the country. With the shorter window for a player to backtrack and come back to school, I highly doubt many guys will be returning. Other than Varnado 2 years ago, has any marquee player come back after "testing the waters"? I don't think so.
Big Losers: Kentucky (I think Knight and Jones are gone, Liggins on the fence), Texas (Hamilton officially gone, looks like Tristan Thompson will soon be gone, Joseph undecided), Georgia (Leslie and Thompkins gone), Kansas (in addition to 3 seniors, losing the Morris twins and Selby). All of the teams go from being potential top 5 to losing a lot. Texas could be downright awful if Joseph also leaves (losing 7 guys from an 8 man rotation).
Winners: UNC, somehow keeping three first rounders, it makes them a clear cut number 1 next fall. Baylor and Ohio State, somehow keeping top 5-10 picks back for another year, while bringing in solid recruiting classes. Louisville, losing one senior, but bringing in a top class and losing no one else.
Mixed: Duke-didn't lose anyone besides seniors and Kyrie Irving, UCLA-lost Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee, but kept Joshua Smith and Reeves Nelson, UConn and Arizona, lost their superstar as expected, but they return a lot.
I think next year's top 10 will be UNC, then after a noticeable dip, teams like Ohio State, Duke, Arizona, Louisville, and UConn. Am I missing anyone? Should be another fairly mediocre year for college ball, I think.

NOPE!! But you are adding someone that you shouldn't.

The entire Pac-10 got decimated again. Pretty much every team lost their best player. I can't see anyone who looks like a top 25 team other than maybe Arizona

Florida is going to be good, but losing Murphy (I assume) will certainly hurt. Walker, Boynton, and Beal competing for shots will be interesting though. Syracuse is better than UConn or Louisville IMO, Vandy should also get some mention for the top 10.

I think Washington is Final Four material. Definitely a Sweet 16 lock at the least.

I hesitate to put Baylor in the top 10. They are losing Dunn, although he is a true ball hog, and he is an important part of the team. They were genuinely bad this year, and while Quincy Miller should be a game changer, I am curious to see how he will come back from injury. Bello is the kind of guy who could have trouble adjusting to D-1.
Peej, I don't think Duke will be all that great next year, but I really can't think of more than 5 teams who could be better than us (UNC, OSU, Zona, UConn, Louisville). Biggest weakness will be guarding the 3, and if DeAndre Daniels comes, that should help quite a bit.

Quincy Miller, Deuce Bello, and Perry Jones all on the floor together will make for one of the most athletic teams in recent memory. Nobody is going to be able to shoot for shite on that team, but they're going to be able to run and defend like crazy.

They're going to need a lot better point guard play from Walton. He really sucked this year.
Posted on 4/23/11 at 12:33 pm to floridatigah
Yeah, I forgot about Syracuse. That is probably a top 10 team although their bigs (Melo and Christmas) are mad overrated and genuinely suck at playing basketball. I think losing Rick Jackson will hurt them, and they will be worse than Louisville, but returning Triche, Joseph, Jardine (although a knucklehead) and bringing in Michael Carter-Williams will make the team good.
Florida, I would have had as a top 10 squad with the older Murphy, but they have 5 guys now, four of whom are shoot first guards. Don't know how the hell that is going to work out. Lots of talent on paper, but I expect chemistry to be a problem.

If Daniels comes (almost seems like a lock at this point), it will be Duke's deepest team under K, I can't remember the last time they had 13 scholarship players. Plum3 and Murphy would probably redshirt, and even then one or two guys that should get PT are going to find themselves on the bench.

Miller is skilled and a good shooter. I think Bello is going to be a flop in year 1 because all he does is run and jump. Fine for AAU, but he couldn't even do much in the regional Jordan game against kids from North Carolina.
Perry Jones has never impressed me. I certainly don't understand the Magic Johnson comparison in that New Yorker article. He is an athletic 6'11" guy who can't do all that much. His pedestrian high school stats should have been a red flag (much like with another top 5 guy in Josh McRoberts).
ETA: Texas and Kentucky fans are probably really pissed right now. With the right guys coming back they could have been top 5, easily.

Walton was pretty bad. They're a seriously flawed team, no shooters, not deep, and bad PG play, but they're going to be tough to score on with all that length. And Keys, I think Bello is going to be really good at the college level, he improved his handle and jump shot considerably this year, he's more than just an insane athlete playing basketball now.

They are going to have some serious depth, size, and length in the front court with Perry Jones, Deuce Bello, Quincy Miller, J'mison Morgan, Quincy Acy, Anthony Jones.
Gary Franklin, a Cal transfer, will help big time in the back court. Last year they were honestly awful, and I honestly didn't expect too much out of them at the beginning of the season. However, this year I expect them to be a definite top 25 team. They are so good in the front court. If they can just get decent play from their guards they should be near the top of the Big XII and a sure fire tournament team. And the good thing about the guards is that they don't lose anything besides Lace, so they should be relatively more experienced.
The only problem is Scott Drew is still the coach.

Gary Franklin Jr will be eligible in January, right? He shot 29 percent from the field and 44 percent from the line. How is that possible?
I can see them as a top 25 team that could pull a 7/2 upset in the NCAA based on size and defense.

Their back court is terrible if Walton plays like he did last year. Any kind of help is good help.
ETA: But yes, they are going to be one of the worst shooting teams ever.

I know they won't. I was talking bout ZONA!

Zona should be a lot better in the back court. They have Nick Johnson (very underrated player) and a real point guard in Josiah Turner, although he seems like a world-class punk already.
I see them as a top 10 squad for now, although maybe I am just shellshocked at how well all of their guys played in the second half of the Sweet 16.

Billy D's gonna unleash his 5-guard offense this year.

I would put UCLA in the losers category. Lee and Honeycutt pretty much ran that team. They basically have no good wings or guards left now.

Agreed on this. I think Arizona is going to be really good next year once their Freshman get going.
