The problem for Stanford is that they don't have the money to keep Harbaugh out of a bigger program or even the NFL. Their athletic department is having serious finanacial troubles and is already having to make significant cuts to a number of programs
Stanford has an endowment of 17.2 Billion, so throwing some chump change at Harbaugh could and probably would, make the program a viable contender for the conference championship and maybe more.
They have the facilities, the coach, now they're getting some athletes (see Tyler Gaffney). It would be crazy not to invest more in football, which is for some if not most of the major powers in D-1, a money maker good enough to fund most of the other sports.
