quote:Did you even watch the regular season? The West was clearly the strongest conference. It was the story of the season, how weak the East was. And Chicago played in one of the most difficult divisions in hockey.
had lowest goals against all season and they were a much better team than anyone in the west, but didn't get the points to show it because they play in a much harder division than any of the west leaders
Philly was actually better than their record. They played solid D and had a league average offense, which should have translated to a middle of the pack conference finish, but they got some bad breaks in the regular season.
But Chicago was consistently the best team all year. And they just beat the Sharks and Canucks to get to the Finals, two teams that had legitimate aims at the Cup themselves. Chicago's got far and away the best starting five in hockey (Toews, Kane, Byflugien, Seabrook, and Keith), though the Flyers do have decent depth. Ift hey can survive the top line, they have a shot.
But I wouldn't be optimistic. The Flyers haven't faced a team anywhere near as good as the Hawks in the playoffs.

no doubt. he had a very good playoffs and was tired at the end but like i said really only had one bad game as far as goals against went this series and that was game 1. never gave up more than 3 after that and that is including empty netters and the fact the turnovers in front of him were atrocious really not even allowing him to get set at times. anyone who watched the games knows what we are talking about(well, i guess that excludes the flyers here). plus he did not get much help defensively or offensively this series at all.
when you see a little warrior like gionta go to the front of the net but pouliot and Ak will not it makes my blood boil.

well, gomer was ok POINTS wise, but i agree, he needed more goals scored also. good chemistry with gomer and gio....but as you say gomer and pleks are small centers. we cannot afford to have our two top lines be equipped with small centers. plus pleks is soft as a ragdoll. gomer is much more valuable overall. we need to get a big center with good hands to replace pleks to complement cammy and get a big winger with good hands to complement gomer and gio.

The same thing that happened to The Habs will happen to Philly. Plus the Hawks are much bigger than the Habs are and will be way to physical for the Flyers. 6 games at most.

well, here's the big question. what we should have done back in 2000 or 2001 was scrap the whole team and rebuild through the draft like the pens and hawks have done. but no, instead we continued to just scratch and claw for a playoff berth or completely missing the playoffs since basically 1998. only once in the last 12 years have we been higher than a #7 seed in the playoffs(with 2007-2008 season being the exception when we won the northeast and were the #1 seed in the east that year). Back in 2000 i would have much rather had a bottom dweller for 4 or even 5 years and then have a contender every year like detroit has done the last 15 years! look at what the pens and hawks have built through the draft due to tanking their seasons.
heck, we could have started that last year when gainey let a ton of UFA's go. but he was proactive and went out and got a good core in cammy, gio, and gomer to build around.
honestly,if we cannot tweak this team and make it better, we need to possibly look at that rebuilding situation again. for 4 or 5 years of bottom dwelling to be a contender for at least a decade is worth it to me. better than the last 12 years of mediocrity in the regular season(with the exception being 2007-2008 when we won the northeast division and were the #1 seed in the east for the playoffs.

Montreal blocked 362 shots in the playoffs
By contrast, here are the shots on goal faced by the other conference finalists:
Chicago 470
Philly 482
San Jose 435
Montreal's goalies faced 200 more shots than San Jose's. Even with all of the blocked shots, that is terrible, terrible defense.

quote:I'd like to think that Montreal is in the exact same situation as Toronto...prior to this frickin salary cap we could simply paper over the cracks with free agent aquisitions...Its a hard lesson to learn but you have to be sooooooo careful with how you spend to the cap...ask Baloo what he believes Calgary has lost due to the cap....I still think done properly like old Burkie is doing; we are going to be the scariest team as a number 8 seed to play in the playoffs...since yourselves of course....

that is the style we played against good offensive teams like the caps and pens. we let the caps shoot all day from the outside with low percentage shots, stayed in the middle in the passing lanes , and then cleared the puck, no doubt the SOG has to get better though overall going forward.

question....I follow hockey pretty closely but some of the minor details that can go along way I still don't quite When a team has the last line shift of a period When must that shift go in? Is there usually a set time it's sent out?
