Well in football a mediocre team can have a few good weeks and get to the Super Bowl.

I gotcha. You singled out .500 so I wanted to address that.

There will be more playoff football. It won’t be a bad thing.

I figured many would like it since it's an extra Wild Card game every year. And I realize most fans don't care about player safety either. But it really penalizes the 2nd best team in each conference that now won't get a bye. In my opinion, if you win 12-13 games you deserve the bye the 1st round. Now that won't be the case for 2 teams every year. I didn't see any reason to fix something that wasn't broken.

Lofty news - ridiculous how many downvotes this has received.

Teams that win 12-13 games miss out on byes nearly every single year.

Doesn’t bother me in the least that the second place team doesn’t get a bye.

ETA: Would you have preferred giving 3 teams a bye?

As long as they seed it according to record with no regards/preferential treatment to division winners, I’m fine with it.

As for y’all complaining about the 7 seed possibly making the Super Bowl, that means in the first two weeks of the playoffs they would have to go on the road and beat the #2 and #1 seed in their conference. Any team that can do that in back to back weeks deserves a Super Bowl berth (yes I know they would still play a third game).

No. I would rather just leave the playoffs alone. I didn't see anything wrong with it. Last year the Chiefs and Packers were among the best teams in their conference. And both got a bye the opening round. But under next year's rule, they wouldn't. With fewer teams getting a bye it doesn't reward very good teams that excel in the regular season as much. And needlessly extends the season of more 8-8 and 9-7 teams that don't deserve it.

Saints and Patriots were among the best teams in the NFL last year but didn’t get a bye. Anyone shed a tear for them?

Giving byes out to three teams cures those inequities. You’re against 3 byes?

ETA: 2nd place team doesn’t deserve anything.

With 2 teams in each conference getting a bye it rewards excellence more than one team in each conference getting one. Teams that excel and put in the blood, sweat, and tears over the course of 4 months deserve something more than an extra home playoff game to me.

Not really. I am against 3 byes since that would drag out the playoffs even longer. I stated earlier that the playoffs should have remained the same it's been for the last 3 decades.

I don't think a 6-10 team will make the playoffs.
