Used a little while ago in Boise-MSU:
quote:

If a player's helmet comes off, he must leave the game for the following down. The only exception to the rule is if the helmet comes off as a result of a penalty (face mask, for example). If the ball carrier's helmet comes off, the play must be whistled dead immediately. No more running into the open field without a helmet.

If a player who is not the ball carrier loses his helmet, he must stop playing. He cannot make a tackle, continue blocking or running a route, for example. If he continues prolonged participation without a helmet, he will be whistled for a 15-yard penalty.

With less than 1 minute remaining in either half, if the ball carrier's helmet comes off, and that is the only reason the play is being whistled dead, there is also a 10-second runoff. If a team has a timeout remaining, the coach can elect to use the timeout instead of running 10 seconds off the clock. But the player must still leave the field for one play, unless his helmet comes off as the result of a foul.

Wat until someone's QB loses their helmet at the end of a game while close to scoring. It will be epic listening to the shitstorm that ensues. Hoepfully it's not something that happens to LSU.

Why is this a stupid rule? It prevents these idiots that want to look cool with a strap or two hanging or too loose a helmet from doing so. I would say with better fitting helmets it would lessen the chances of head injuries.

Because losing your helmet isn't really your fault, it's gonna suck for whomever has a QB this happens too...

You know, I see it more in the NFL than in college, but I haven't seen helmets fly for no reason. It seems like it is the same guy that loses their helmet every other play. That helmet doesn't fit and is their fault.

I really can't remember a time when I saw the QB's helmet come off in gameplay.

It's a dumb rule but it really shouldn't be much of an issue if you have your helmet on correctly.

Now they gonna have to snap all 4 of their chinstrap snaps. My high school coach hated seeing chinstraps hanging and not snapped.

If everyone had been wearing their helmet properly in the first place I don't think this rule would have ever been put in place.

Helmets don't just fall off. You do understand that, don't you?

They used it last night in the SC-Vandy game. Lattimore had hit hat knocked off. Left uninjured came back next play.

Interesting. Are head injuries common in Rugby? I've had the opinion that if they did away with helmets and taught proper tackling it would lessen the severe head injuries. No DB would launch at a WR coming across the middle and violent contact would go down in general. The only flaw to this, may be how much bigger and faster the players of today are to old school football.
