Pretty sure the student body said they were going to do it as a joke but it's still pathetic.

Here's the story:

A few weeks ago, someone wrote to the Observer (school paper) that since all seniors are allowed on the field after the final home game every year (win or lose, blowout or close game, big opponent or terrible team), and that (assuming we beat Tulsa) getting blown out by Utah would make the senior class the losingest class in school history and that the seniors shouldn't just walk on the field, but storm it in recognition of such an accomplishment. Of course, it was a joke.

It turns out that "record" was actually set against Tulsa. However, after Utah today, the seniors started to go on the field, but in a sense stormed it, out of excitement. After a bit of every other section standing around, waiting for the alma mater, they saw the seniors and kind of followed their lead and started to rush as well. If it wasn't senior day, basically, I don't know/think we would have rushed.

But anyway, who really cares? Yes, we rushed the field. In case you've never done it, it's a pretty fun thing to do. Older people too often look at stuff college kids do (like this and the "overrated" chant, for example) from their mindset, not those of college kids, and critique. Let's weigh the two options to college kids: "Let's not have fun and rush the field, because that team is only a Mountain West team", or "To hell with it, let's just go". College kids aren't thinking about the "message" it sends. Nobody is thinking this is some amazing win. Nobody thinks that ND is "back" because of this. It is a good win, though, given ND's recent past, and it could help change the program's direction. But most of all it's just a fun thing to do. It's less about the win, more about the act of it.

LSU rushed the field TWICE in 2000. Against 8-4 Tennessee, and 8-4 MISS STATE.

Every program does it in hard times. Stop acting like this is just an ND thing.

LSU back then isn't remotely like LSU now or even Notre Dame now, considering Notre Dame's history.

Exactly. You said Georgia Southern should rush the field, but Notre Dame NEVER should. LSU did the same thing, but you're not criticizing them, because you sucked then. ND has sucked in recent years. Is it sad Utah's a big win? Yeah. And I hope and expect it will change under Kelly in a few years. But for now, that's where we are.

Who cares about ND's history? In the seniors' four years, Notre Dame is five games below .500. The program in recent years has not been good. This was a big win, in the seniors' last home game, and will hopefully help propel the Irish to bigger and better things.

Isn't Notre Dame's history what makes them relevant?

I didn't think we should have, either, today. But once it happens, and everyone's running around out there and having fun and pushing people down, why not just go and enjoy yourself? It really only takes a few to start storming before everyone does. Most people in the stands realized Utah's record was due to one of the worst schedules in the country and that we did better against the one common opponent us and Utah had (Pitt). While people were happy and think it was a good win, no one was thinking it was elite. Still, why not just go? Why not have fun on the field with your friends, the players, the band, etc?

They should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that to happen.

ND is relevant as far as people talk about us. People care (either way) and people will watch. If people stopped doing that, even with the history, ND would no longer be "relevant". But people will always have an opinion about the Irish. ND will never be irrelevant.

ND's history is what led us to be relevant, but it's not what's kept us relevant.

LSU rushed the field after beating an unranked Alabama in this decade.

People talk about ND because of their history. It's definitely what keeps them relevant. Otherwise, what's their appeal?

And with that history, it's a shame to see ND students rushing the field after their team beat a WAC school. It is what it is.

I think it was 2000 and I think Bama lost 8 games that year.
