Chad Knaus will serve as crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet for driver William Byron in 2019, a move that will end the longest current driver-crew chief pairing in the NASCAR garage with Knaus and Jimmie Johnson.

Hendrick Motorsports announced the news Wednesday as part of a reshuffling of crew chiefs for two of its four teams in the Monster Energy Series. Johnson will be paired with Kevin Meendering, currently a crew chief for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, on the No. 48 Chevrolet operation next year.

The Knaus-Johnson partnership produced a record-tying seven championships.

I feel like retirement is close for Johnson. No Lowes as a sponsor and Knaus is gone.

50+ wins and 7 championships in 17 years- that's just an absurd amount of success in motorsports. I never thought Hendrick would split them up.

How does a nascar racer get washed up? He forget how to slightly turn left?

I think it's more of Hendrick got washed up. JJ and Jr had a big decline at the same time. JJ still won #7 but he had a down year by his standards. I can't explain Chase's success though, but even he had trouble winning until recently.

And then there's the possible curse of championship #8

Chase's success though,

I know it happens a lot but Chase just fell into that win at Dover.
