Why should he fight in a war for a country that said he could not eat at a lunch counter because of the color of his skin?
Why would he give a frick if he makes enough money that his taxes for winning one fight could pay for an army tank? If he had that much money he could have had any white girl he wanted to serve him whatever food he wanted off her gigantic tits just out of spite for the way SOME of society treated him..
I know it was a lot different for black in the 50's and 60's. He was super rich, he could have avoided it mostly if he wanted to (not that he should of had to).

Navy only made David Robinson serve 2 of his 5 years. Staubach wouldn't of had to put up much of a fight if he didn't want to go to Vietnam. He would of had to stay in the Navy i'm sure, but he didn't have to fight in combat if he didn't want to.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Staubach could have requested an assignment in the States, but he chose to volunteer for a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam where he served as a Supply Corps officer for the United States Navy until 1967
That's called being a man, and being an American.
frick Ali.

WW2 is Eady to sign up for since they attacked us. We ha no beef in Vietnam.
Can't argue about the war in Iraq either since there was no draft.

i always find it funny when people throw this shite around. You could say the Vietnam war, in itself, was anti-American.
I find it strange that people take so much blind pride in what they are born into. You should take pride in what you achieve

What they should do is drop to their knees and thank the Lord Almighty that they were born in this great country.

Sure makes it easier here. I wonder what one would be able to achieve if he was born in N Korea, Bangledesh or Haiti? Rocket straight to the top!

Staubach believed in the Vietnam conflict. Ali didn't.
Doesn't make Staubach a better man in any way, shape, or form.
Robinson's change came at a different time, as well.
I would say that you're better than this, but...

IMO, there is way more to this story than that. Ali was told what to do by the joke that was that early black Muslim brotherhood. He/they thought he would get away with it.

From what I know about the 2 men I would disagree with this, war excluded.
What pisses me off the most about Ali is how Frazier supported his arse, helped him get back into boxing then Ali shite on him.

He's a piece of crap. He's an obnoxious, draft dodging, anti-american, womaning a-hole.
Joe Frazier = class act. RIP

guess Roger Staubach didn't have much going for him, that's why he went to Vietnam. Nothing like winning the Heisman and then going fight for your country, then winning the super bowl MVP
Service academy don't have a choice.

I guess, but why would he have gone to Navy in the first place if he didn't want to serve in the military?

Maybe if he would have met the honorable Elijah Muhammad in time.

How do you know that? I never read anything saying Staubach believed in the Vietnam war.
Maybe he just wasn't a loudmouth frickface.
Maybe he just believed in what his country stood for and would do what it asked of him.
You think everyone in Iraq and Afghanistan wanted to be there, or believed we should be there? they are all "volunteers", but they are still fighting for their country.
Most people see the reason why we went into WWII and have no problem with it.
You think everyone in WWI wanted or believed we should be there? We weren't provoked into it by an attack like pearl harbor. You had men that believed in their country for the most part and were willing to fight for it when it asked that of them. Those types of men are dwindling in this country.

guess you missed the part where he asked to do a tour in Vietnam, when he could have easily stayed stateside if he wanted to.

what does this country stand for and how does it relate to the Vietnam war?

bullshite! In those days, staying stateside wouldn't have been an option for Anapolis graduates like Staubach just like it wasn't for John McCain.

At the time Ali and a lot of other Blacks didn't believe in what it stood for.
