Bleed, I agree completely with most badges that have a football in them. Can't stand that.

The difference here, is that a mascot has always been a part of American sports culture. Most football clubs sprung up from sporting clubs that were already in existence, which added football as it became too profitable to ignore. Many of the "City" and "Athletic" clubs existed as rowing/tennis/lawn bowling clubs. Once football came in, then became professional it all changed and they got popular.

They weren't founded with mascots or nicknames, those just sort of came organically from fan/member usage or newspapermen or local area activities. Some simply derived from the colors of the kit.

But starting a new league at the end of the 20th century, where marketing, branding, product placement are tantamount, especially in the United States, there was no way MLS was going to be able to thrive and survive without the ingrained nickname and "visible" mascot.

Of course we've seen MLS change, too. Dallas began it's life as the Burn with the Bad-Breath Horse on the kit. Seems after a few years, the supporters demanded change and got it. Salt Lake and Toronto came into the league with "soccer" nicknames, because it seems that fans WANT to be serious about the soccer. Same with Houston Dynamo.

If I'm the MLS, I'm much more concerned at improving the quality of play and officiating than the quality of kit or the mascots. That's just my opinion.

Starting from scratch in 1996, though, you need BOTH. Need fans, supporters, sponsors in order to afford quality of play and officiating. JMO, though.

Oh, yeah, I agree. I'm talking about going forward from here (2010), though.

And people can't really complain about Sounders, Timbers, and Whitecaps when talking about tradition in the sport in North America, and that'll be 1/6th of the league come next year.

I realize expansion clubs make up most of the league and in particular draw most of the fans. I'm not saying we need to utilize our tradition (which we really have none of). I'm just saying I think we should utilize soccer culture when developing our own soccer league. We can use mascots for revenue purposes but still stay true to traditional soccer culture by not demeaning our jerseys where we include a huge "WIZARDS" as 75% of KC's badge does. IMO that would legitimize us a bit more. I like how Toronto, Dallas, Salt Lake, DC all try and fit this mold and many of them are very successful in doing so. Its possible to be financially successful while staying true to soccer culture.

Most of the clubs have Euro style kits and crests now. It may seem cheesy and awkward now, but I think most of the winning franchises have adopted them well.

agreed. you can definitely see a huge effort by the league to legitimize themselves to fans here in the states. I think those teams like KC will also choose to modernize their kits, mascots, badges, etc. As the quality of our development systems and, in turn, our players improve the MLS will become a legitimate league. Playing international friendlies and drawing big name veterans to the league before their retirement plays a huge part in drawing fan interest.

The Retirement League concept has worked extremely well in some cases. To an extent it has rejuvenated the careers of Freddie Ljungberg, Guillermo Barros Schelletto and Juan Pablo Angel.

Let's look at becks for example. Has he had a huge impact on the play itself? No, but it garnered a lot of much needed attention for the league. Hopefully a healthy mix of fading stars and development of new talent can grow the league.
