I can't link to gambling sites at work. Go to Blood Horse, they ranked all of the horses of all time. Man O War was #1. I'm pretty sure the Daily Racing Form did the same.
Im sure Man O War was great in his day. Horse racing, boxing, and a little baseball was all the country had in those days.
You cant tell me that any horse was as great as Secretariat though. I remember his run, I was a 14 year old kid playing summer baseball at the time. When he won the crown EVERYBODY was watching. The way he won it was once in a lifetime. People, experts really thought he was going to die on the track "he's just running too damn fast"
He carried himself like a King. Jockeys never put a whip on him. They just turned him loose. His times still hold up almost 40 years later. Big Red was the best. Fond memories for me.

I'm not saying Secretariat wasn't great. He most certainly was. Man O War is like Babe Ruth. Once again, 100 lengths. Think about that.

People don't realize how beloved Man o War was. He was as famous or more famous then Secretariat in his day. When he died in 1947, they actually had a funeral for him and broadcast it over the radio. Over 2000 people came to his funeral. Secretariat may have been on the cover of the magazines, but Man o War was also a national icon. He was a freak of nature.
Secretariat also had losses in the Woodward and Whitney that really aren't excusable if you want to call him the greatest horse of all time in my opinion.

quote:Something else to realize is that racehorses, being thoughbreds, come from a very limited pool of genetic stock. As more and more horses are bred each year, you havee the same genes being passed on because you have to bread a thoughbred to a thoughbred in order to register it as such and race it - you can't crossbreed a thoughbred and a quarterhorse and run the offspring at Churchill on the 1st Saturday in May.
I saw some information about that a couple years back in the pre Derby buildup. The track experts pointed out that the speed of horses has not improved at the pace of humans. Their reasoning was that horses don't train and run to break records. Humans study techniques and train with an intense desire to improve their performance. Horses just run with the urging of their jockey.
I have actually read studies that say the inbreeding will lead to more incidents like Eight Belles breaking down on the track because the genetic deficiencies are brought to the surface by having the same source for sire and dam. Look at a DRF for any of the triple crown races and look at how many times the same names appear as either sire, dam or grand sire.
Even if you could come up with a training regimen that could increase the speed of the horses, there is a good chance they animals could not physically withstand it.

I have read that too...so many horses have the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer line in their pedigree now its ridiculous.
