didn't I hear that even if he has surgery the day after the season, he's still gonna have to miss all of '09 anyway? If he's got to sit out a year regardless, it'd be best to get it over with.

I really think this is a PR stunt by Merriman and his agent. He has everybody thinking that he's such a huge gamer, and eventually the Chargers or the NFLPA or somebody will step in and "talk Merriman into surgery".
Same result, but Shawne will get the added benefit of looking like he's just so gung-ho for football that he's worth the huge payday looming in 2010. If you remember, there was some offseason criticism that maybe he doesn't love football enough.
This is just a ploy to "prove his love for football". He will end up getting the surgery.

Like they give a shite. The want him to forgo surgery. He is useless if he has surgery, but if he plays and gets hurt at least they got something out of him this year
