There will always be a serious contender for the crown that could use elite PG play, and/or a Knicks/Nets/Lakers/Port/Magic/Bulls large market or Billionaire owned team, etc..willing to pay handsomely for a missing piece moving foward, even if not a contender at present.
As long as CP3 doesn't get seriously hurt, or slow down in current production, he has a pretty large asking price in fair trade value over the next 18 months.

Did you just refer to Portland as a large market?
Posted on 6/25/10 at 12:01 am to TheRoarRestoredInBR
so a team would be willing to give up the same trade value for a player who has one year remaining on contract as opposed to one who has two years left? gtfo

expiring contracts in itself are valuable, and u pair that with the best PG in the game.....yeah, you'll get value.
problem is if they keep them that long they might as well not deal him unless they get an outrageous offer back. which is also unlikely
they'll never get fair value for him. i dont see him going anywhere

chris paul could turn into baron davis if he were being held captive in a place he didnt want to be. and i bet that wouldnt help our trading prospects.lazy play, a few injuries, just saying that was my point.

Nah, he really can't.

I think Paul has this desire to be liked by everyone, so he would never tank as hard as Baron. Besides, he is better than Baron was at his peak.
But I am confused by the premise of this thread. What have the Hornets done to show they are any less committed now than a week ago?
The Mo Pete salary dump was a smart move.

No, Portland refers to the Billionaire owner part..with one of the world's best yachts.

yea a smart move. does it look like the hornets have done anything to give this team a better chance against the top teams. all they have done is dump salary. and passed on impact players in the draft for two lesser ones who wouldnt cost much as the one we picked, in the draft. doesnt look much like a team who's #1 concern is winning now. thats what chris wants, he doesnt want to sit around and watch a team work out its financial situation. thats the reality of it. sorry guys, it came from the horses mouth.

creely, I never said two years out = one year out of free agency trade value.
Only that CP3 will have a high value regardless. One like others mention here, will probably never be seen, as teams will just wait for him to walk free in two years.
NO, as a small market, is one of those rare cases, where the need to milk their marquee guy for Tix, supercedes their need to get something for him before he bolts one day. Regardless of whether Shinn the Degree Mill Scheister stays owner, or Chouest the local guy takes over..both need CP3's allure to the Nawlins/La fanbase at this point to fill an empty arena.

But what could they do instead? They obviously can't go after marquee free agents and this was a very weak draft outside of a few elite talents.
Xavier Henry and Patrick Patterson are going to be better than Brackins, but not that much better that a second first rounder and a good salary dump make the team less competitive.
At least the move gives them some flexibility to try to work some trades to get rid of the two worst salaries on the team. With Peja and Okafor on board, I don't see what New Orleans can do right now, but they can angle for something better in the future.
That's basically what the Heat and Knicks have done the past year, though I realize they are obviously more appealing spots for free agents.

If Paul is traded, attendance will drop off the map and the Hornets will be gone within 5 years.
