More about illegal passes than you want to know, but here goes.
Ruling - legal pass
In addition, if at any time the ball is carried beyond the NZ, any forward pass during the down is illegal.
Enforcement - 5 yds from spot of the foul and loss of down
You get "credit" for the run yardage before the illegal pass; otherwise, the runner can make a 30 yd run and, in the attempt to make a backward pass (lateral), commit the foul and lose the legal yardage.
There's a lot more in the illegal pass rule, but those are applicable to this example.
