The list of recipients still doesn't legitimize the ESPYs some meaningful awards show, especially because the primary aim in sports is the win a championship in your respective league. Aside from Jim Valvano, could you or anyone else name any past recipient of the AACA? I can pretty much guarantee you that Steph Curry isn't losing sleep working about whether or not he wins the ESPY for Best NBA Player.

Again, I'm not defending Bruce Jenner at all, I'm just pointing out that getting up in arms about the ESPYs, which haven't been relevant since Jim Valvano's speech, is a complete waste of time. You're boycotting something you weren't going to watch anyway. It's not like he's getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom or a being named a Nobel laureate.

why are people getting up in arms about a meaningless award given out at an irrelevant awards show that was created by a sports network. I've watched probably 2 full minutes of the ESPYs in my entire life

My only issue with it is instead of using that stage to promote a worthy cause or deserving individual that could bring much needed attention or money to something, they're whoring themselves out for a rating all the while pretending they're doing something noble or being open minded.

This x 1000

ESPN lost their credibility a long time ago and it's why I don't get hung up on stuff like this. Feel good stories are good filler pieces. Front page headlines are the stories that make everyone hate each other and cause a huge divide. Very few on either side of the political spectrum realize their own media outlets are simply manipulating them. This stuff is probably planned out weeks in advance.

ESPN should have taken their own award more serious if they want the public to watch

They want the public to watch. That's EXACTLY why they're giving an award to Caitlyn Jenner. Look at the ratings the interview with Diane Sawyer got and all the people reacting to the Vanity Fair cover. It's ESPNs dopey awards show, they can give shite to whoever they want in an effort to attract viewers. I think the public butt hurt about this is really funny, it's not like Caitlyn Jenner is getting a Nobel Peace Prize or a Congressional Medal of Honor. I mean, the only Arthur Ashe award winners I can name are Arthur Ashe and Michael Sam. Or did Pat Tillman get one?

You think less people are going to watch with the Jenner thing and more would have watched if it were Lauren Hill?

That's the thing -- I agree, which is why there's no point in getting upset about it. I'd care if it was an award that meant something, but it's an irrelevant awards show by an entertainment network looking for an angle to gin up viewership.

They're doing this for the same reason they spent two years covering Tim Tebow nonstop when he was arguably the worst QB in the NFL. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, nor get anyone rustled.

Not on an individual basis no. But I sure as hell would watch, haven't in years, if she was the standard of what the ESPY's stood for. I don't know if people corrupted media or if the media corrupted the people. I'm pretty sure it is past the point of return though.

I think while the ESPYs are for pure entertainment value, they are connected to something very real which is sports and athletes. I take it as the Academy awards are for movies and acting. Sports awards are for athletes and all the sacrifices and pain they go through to perform. Sports transcends life and I think most would agree that the Arthur Ashe Courage award has gone to some very inspirational people and giving it Caitlyn Jenner kind of makes it a big frickin joke.
