I haven't seen the play, but roughing the passer is an automatic first down, a late hit, or holding, or facemask, etc.. will go against the spot of the ball on the return.

You are incorrect sir. I know because West Monroe had a touchdown called back tonight for this reason. WM picked it off and ran it back. They called a facemask, gave the ball back to Byrd, and took the touchdown off the board.

Because football rules aren't necessarily meant to be logical(the concept of logic and sports is another one entirely). The purpose of the rules is to discourage the behavoir on the field. If you give an automatic first down for roughing the passer you are adding increased incentives not to perform this behavoir.

It isn't hard to understand. Was the penalty, before or after the change of possession?

I have no clue. The point I am making is that it results in a first down to make damn sure people don't want to do it.

The rules are logical-

If it occurs prior to the change of possession, 15 yards from where the play started,.. if it happened after change of possession, 15 yards from where it occurred.

Nevermind. It was a theoretical point about the nature of rules.

Was it before the change of posession? If yes, offense gets the ball back. If it was on the return, it goes against the spot of the ball.
