Late Hit on QB that throws INT. Why is the INT overturned?

This just happened in the Baylor/UConn game.
It would seem to me that the defense should get to keep the ball, with the late hit penalty being assessed against them on offense.
It's not like a late hit alters a QB's throw. If it did, it wouldn't be a late hit.

If the play wasn't over, then it counts for that play. If it was after the whistle, then the INT would count.

same reason a face mask that has nothng to do with someone fumbling reverses a fumble.

dumb reasoning I think

Dude, its an illegal play. A late hit on a QB during a play will always reverse whatever the play is, unless the offense declines the penalty. It doesn't matter how you rationalize it. That is the rule.

pulling someones facemask could increase the odds of a guy fumbling, hitting a guy after he has already released the ball does not affect the pass

If it occurred while the play was still live (before whistle blows, it counts for that play). Same reason why roughing the punter gives you the ball back. So unless the QB was hit after the play was over, it's an automatic 1st down.

I know, I'm just saying the rule is dumb.

Pulling a facemask of a wide receiver while the halfback fumbles doesn't increase the odds of that HB fumbling.

Another dumb rule, if you ask me.

Let me clarify that, if the hit was before the defender caught the INT, it's roughing the passer, and an automatic first down. If after, it's the opposing team's ball and penalty goes against the spot of the ball. There is no roughing the passer penalty after the INT is thrown, the QB can be hit on the return.

It wasn't a late hit. the announcers are wrong. It was roughing the passer. The call was for leading with the crown of the helmet.

It's not dumb, it's discipline. Play the ball, and if hitting the punter will make your day, do it on the return (after the ball is caught AND it's not a fair catch since the play is dead after the catch).

It occurred before the change of possesion!
If you pickup the QB and spike him on his head after you have picked off the ball, you keep it.

I haven't seen the play, but roughing the passer is an automatic first down, a late hit, or holding, or facemask, etc.. will go against the spot of the ball on the return.

yeah, that's what I said.

I didn't realize a "late hit" (i.e. unnecessary roughness) was in any meaningful way different from roughing the passer. I just thought these were different terms for the same penalty.

A late hit on the QB can be roughing the passer. However, the call was not for a late hit on the QB. The call was for hitting the QB with the crown of the helmet. It was NOT a late hit. It was a perfectly on time, yet illegal, hit.

A late hit applies after the play is dead.
