Isiah Thomas says he has paid a "heavy price" for declining to shake hands with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1991 playoffs, but Bill Laimbeer does not regret the Detroit Pistons' infamous decision.

quote:

With 7.9 seconds remaining in the Bulls' 21-point rout to end the series, the Pistons -- at Laimbeer's behest, according to Thomas -- walked off the court without shaking the Bulls players' hands or congratulating them.

quote:

"I thought I should've made that Dream Team," Thomas said. "However, I wasn't a part of it. That hurt me, and looking back, if I'm not a part of the Dream Team because a lapse in emotion in terms of not shaking someone's hand -- if that's the reason why I didn't make the Dream Team, then I am more disappointed today than I was back then when I wasn't selected."

quote:

But Laimbeer remains unapologetic, telling Nichols that Jordan and the Bulls were "whiners."

"They whined and cried for a year and a half about how bad we were for the game, but more importantly, they said we were bad people," Laimbeer said. "We weren't bad people. We were just basketball players winning, and that really stuck with me because they didn't know who we were or what we were about as individuals and our family life. "But all that whining they did, I didn't want to shake their hand.

They were just whiners. They won the series. Give him credit: We got old, they got past us. But OK, move on."

Is not backing out like a bitch like Thomas. Daley came up with the “Jordan Rules” and Laimbeer followed the marching orders.

"frick you Bill" - Larry Bird

Nobody liked Laimbeer.

Bird said he would try to end your career by sliding his foot underneath you as tried a jumpshot. He wanted to break ankles.

"We weren't bad people."

Yes you were Bill you were a piece of shite and not a real sportsman, you were a dirty player. And teams whined because you were a dirty cheat.

I actually respect Laimbeer for this. At least he owns it. Isiah just looks like a massive two face and has carried this chip around for almost 30 years now.

Wouldn't it be Jordan who does that? He won literally times 1000 over Isiah and is still calling them assholes over it.

Yes, the best moment is when Robert Parish KO'd Laimbeer on the court with a one two sucker punch and the refs just called a normal two shot foul.

That's how much the league hated Laimbeer and those god awful Pistons. They didn't even kick Parish out of the game, they didn't even give him a technical foul.

Parish pummeled Laimbeer on the court with a bloody face and all Laimbeer got was two shots from the charity stripe.

The article implies that Jordan may have played a role in keeping Thomas off of the dream team. Does anyone believe that?

It's probably the prevailing theory. MJ and Isiah haven't liked each other since MJ's first allstar game, and most people thing MJ was clear that if he played, it wouldn't be with Isiah.

Isiah was a much bigger name than Stockton at that point.

Yes. Jordan's still complaining about what they did 30 years ago so when it was months later he was probably still heated. Pippen has said he didn't want him on the team. Magic probably wasn't Isiah's biggest backer then either.

They did suspend him for Game 6 after reviewing it though.

Sad, because it was deserved.

Robert Parish also didn't really take any crap from MJ.
Remembering The Time Robert Parish Knocked Bill Laimbeer The F*ck Out

quote:

Parish performs mixed martial arts and once stood up to Michael Jordan — the Chief played his final season for the 1996-97 Bulls after MJ came back from his baseball sabbatical. As Jackie MacMullen once reported for ESPN.com, Parish basically told an angry MJ at practice that there was no way he was going to kick the seven-footer’s arse, even though Parish was in his 40s:

In one of his first practices with the Bulls, Parish botched one of the plays and was amused to find Jordan jawing at him just inches from his face.

quote:

“I told him, ‘I’m not as enamored with you as these other guys. I’ve got some rings too,’ ” Parish recalled. “At that point he told me, ‘I’m going to kick your arse.’ I took one step closer and said, ‘No, you really aren’t.’ After that he didn’t bother me.”

I like MJ but that's a great story.

Laimbeer has not wavered in the 30 years since that happened because he has no conscience/soul/feelings etc

Magic had a close relationship with Isiah, but it began fracturing when Magic became friends with MJ. Magic didn't take Isiah's side in the Dream Team, and that was probably the final straw in breaking their relationship.

Added to the impression he was a poor sport and the public perceived him as the leader of that squad

quote:

I thought I should've made that Dream Team," Thomas said. "However, I wasn't a part of it. And the rest of the team blackballed him and Magic stabbed him in the back despite they were good friends

quote:

They were just whiners. They won the series. Give him credit: We got old, they got past us. But OK, move on.

This is all true plus the Pistons in a way made the 90s Bulls by forcing them to be mentally tougher, take no prisoners, and turn back all challengers like the Roughball Knicks and Pacers, in a weird way they should be thanking them

I can see both sides of the MJ/Thomas feud. First they were rivals and both had the personality that rivalry meant hatred. Next, Thomas led the charge to freeze out Jordan in his first all-star game, was a big part of the Jordan Rules and took part in not shaking hands so you can see why MJ was pissed. Truth of the matter Jordan probably would have hated him without any of those things because he was such a competitor and the Pistons were their biggest roadblock.

On the flip side, Thomas should have been on the Dream Team and its bullshite if MJ did a power move to keep him off. So I completely agree that Thomas paid a heavy price for his actions.
