I remember him calling an LSU basketball game Shaq's freshman year. It was weird. I had never heard him do anything but football.

I recall him saying he didn't understand the hype around O'Neal - he wasn't impressed.

I remember he did one Michigan game and he said one of the Michigan O-linemen told him all he wanted in life was for Keith Jackson to call him a Hoss.
So, as soon as the kid got in, Keith said "Here you go, son. You're a Hoss".

He did NBA basketball, the Indianapolis 500 and Monday Night Baseball, too, for ABC. Edit: And of course, the first year of Monday Night Football and I think he did Olympic boxing.

I was very glad he made an exception to his travel policy and came to the Texas-Oklahoma game his last year in the booth (which ended, of course, with the Texas-USC Rose Bowl).

Keith Jackson in his last few years is like Vern's now. You knew it was time for him to hang it up.

Yep. He was bitter, he was slow, he got flustered. I don't know how Dan Fouts stood him. But he certainly went out on a high note.
