And I mean when the wind blows or it gets cloudy and looks like it may rain. It's insane how easy the signal goes out.
That's what I hated about it as well. I was mostly pleased with DirecTV initially, but once the introductory offer expired, it got expensive in a hurry.

You'd be surprised how many dishes are out of alignment. A normal rain storm shouldn't cause issue
I worked in that industry and they said like 70% of dishes were out of alignment. After a storm a strong wind can move it by a tenth of an inch and therefore your signal goes from 100% to 70/80%. That's huge when a storm comes next time
Directv will fix for free and do tests to assure its 100%. Mine was fixed and in over a year it's gone out once for a few minutes during a hail storm in the spring.
Also technology has come a long way with dishes. Now a days they are much better engineered for the sweet spot and get much better reception than even 3-5 years ago.

My parents have had direct TV for probably 7-8 years. The first year or two was the "blow in the wind and it goes out" type, then they either updated or got aligned because they haven't had any issues since barring a hurricane

This. When I first switched to DirecTV, it would always go out. One day it happened when their wasn't a cloud in the sky. I called and spoke to someone. They sent a guy out the next day and it's 100x better. It hardly ever goes out. If it does go out, Apple TV for backup.

Hadn't heard that, but DirecTV technician took a couple hours to set mine up. Most of the time the signal was fine, but if it got cloudy or rained the signal usually was gone. Missed a chunk of the 2010 Duke/Butler title game because of storms. They tried to sell me some extra "service maintanance" or something back then, so I am surprised that is a freebie now. Still don't miss the $80 a month bill though.
