re: Just how impressive was Dan Marino's 1984 campaign?

If Montana was simply a product of a system, you would think that system could have been replicated by other teams around the NFL

People use the same argument with Terrell Davis and that Shanahan running scheme,
You guys are looking at in zero sum terms. The “system” doesn’t work with literally anyone, SF (and Denver for that matter) had talent every where including on the coaching staff. So no you couldn’t just replicate it anywhere. It’s like people that say Joe Schmo would win with Bama’s talent. SF had success with multiple QBs, a dude named Mike Anderson ran for like 1600 yds in Denver. Only Montana and Young won because those guys were special but the fact they had 10 win seasons (like NE won 11 without Brady) shows its more that just the QB. But if Montana was drafted by the Saints or the Lions would have won 4 rings? If SF drafted Brady would they have 10 Lombardi’s? I doubt it. Now they would have done well, put up stats and probably gotten to the playoffs just like Marino and Manning but the success is a product of the organizations combined with the QB

That's why he dropped in the draft.
there was that drug rumor.
It's been said that the drug use rumor was started by people in the NFL to have him fall to a talented team.

Marino's agent has long said he never heard it from NFL teams leading up to the draft nor does he believe it originated from them...but by the media.
More shocking...as you can see from the video I posted was that the real concern was that he wasn't that talented from the public's perception - look at them compare him to David Woodley.
The Los Angeles Express had a smart man at the helm, drafting Marino #1 and then getting Steve Young the next year.
While the NFL drafted Tony Eason, Ken O'Brien ahead of Marino.

Eason was All American in Juco and College and when healthy took Pats to Super Bowl
OBrien was a Pro Bowler.
The only really bad QB pick was Blackledge and the Steelers taking Rivera. But Noll wanted him i think.

Blackledge was really bad.
But he had won a Natty.
That was somewhat of the NFL back then.
But we look at this stuff in hindsight...and that video I posted shows how down people were on Marino.
Dr. Z even says: I don't understand it. (The pick by the Dolphins to draft Marino.)

See...I don't know if I necessarily agree with this quote, even if it did come from the man who invented the system. If Montana was simply a product of a system, you would think that system could have been replicated by other teams around the NFL. Thing is...they weren't replicated and couldn't be replicated. Why? Because Joe Montana was a damn good QB. His decision making and his leadership were tops in the NFL during his era. You look at his 1989 campaign and tell me he was the simple product of a system.
If you've ever studied the West Coast offense compared to what the traditional Coryell-based pro-style offenses of the day, you'd know that the West Coast was designed specifically to overcome lack of talent at the QB position.
Montana and Young were good QB's in a great system.
Dan Marino was a great QB.

At a time when defenses could actually play defense.
It is a pretty impressive feat.

Maybe it's because the designer of the system, Bill Walsh, wasn't on those other teams.
So only the designer of a system can have success with said system? Tell that to Kirby Smart at Georgia. Tell that to Bear Bryant at Alabama. Tell that to Steve Spurrier at Florida.
Heck, Joe Montana and the 49ers offense didn't have their best statistical year until AFTER Walsh retired from coaching.

I would argue they were both great QBs in a great system.

Which was five less than they won the year before with Brady. AND they missed the playoffs to boot. That same team probably goes to the Super Bowl with Brady.

It wasnt just impressive, it was extraordinary.
Like I mentioned before, it would take a QB today to throw for 5700 yds and probably around 55-60 TDs to equal what was seen back then. Something unheard of at the time. Marino was born with a golden arm. The passes Aaron Rodgers makes today, Marino was making those all the time.

I do miss his bullets and bombs.
