See...I don't know if I necessarily agree with this quote, even if it did come from the man who invented the system. If Montana was simply a product of a system, you would think that system could have been replicated by other teams around the NFL. Thing is...they weren't replicated and couldn't be replicated. Why? Because Joe Montana was a damn good QB. His decision making and his leadership were tops in the NFL during his era. You look at his 1989 campaign and tell me he was the simple product of a system.

People use the same argument with Terrell Davis and that Shanahan running scheme, thing is none of TD's successors accomplished what he did those 4 seasons that was rushing DOMINANCE scored a bunch of TDs too (TD for TD ), that 1998 2,000 yd season could've been EVEN GREATER dude was pulled from a bunch of Bronco blowout games

And even Bill Walsh somewhat agreed.

Marino vs Montana with equal supporting talent and coaching in 1 game, gun to your head who you picking?

Coin flip, don't forget now Marino was a pretty damn clutch QB in his own right-Fake Spike Game team was down I believe 24-6 on the road among others he achieved

IK this is a logic game we're playing here but you really can't go wrong with either so much evidence to support both QBs claims, Marino was more talented than Montana physically and that arm was a gift from God so in that light I'd select Marino by the slightest of margins, we have to remember Montana was supported by probably one of the greatest defenses ever whereas that certainly wasn't the case for Marino's teams that passing game pretty much had to carry the day for them almost like Fouts' passing carried the Air Coryell Chargers

This is essentially the Brady vs Manning if he 80’s. Marino is obviously one of the best to ever play but Joe Montana is football Jesus and you’re taking your life into your own hands betting against him.

Goes both ways the evidence of Marino’s clutchness is quite impressive particularly when engaged in QB shootouts

Remember that 4th down game-winning bomb Marino threw against the Pats 1994 opening day after recovering from the Achilles injury, concluding one of the greatest performances of all-time?

Loaded question in my opinion. Obviously in hindsight Im going Montana. But Marino in that system, a system never seen before in its time, would be pretty interesting.

Of course it is, that’s why I said coin flip you can’t go wrong with either QB in that scenario

Cannot argue with this.

Also, let's not dump on Bert Jones. He was damn good.

Because history has already been written. Montana was a vital piece, obviously.

Would Marino have less success? I can’t say, no. Can you?
