re: Is the problem with the Harbaugh offense the same as the problem with the Les offense?

but im not quite seeing the optimism for next year?
You're a ND fan right? Look how much better they look with the changes Kelly made. It's not out of the realm of possibility that all these first year players will be much improved next year.

he schedule appears to be much more difficult.
This is true. That schedule is pretty brutal.

and this is considered "building" todays current Stanford program?
Yes. The foundation of physical, hard nosed football was set under Harbaugh. Shaw has done a hell of a job sustaining it.
I'm not entirely sure that you remember exactly how bad that 2006 Stanford team was. They went 1-11 and got blown out in just about every loss. Their win was against a pretty bad Washington team, IIRC.
Fast forward a few years. The 49ers were going nowhere fast. They hadn't made the playoffs since 2002 and Alex Smith was viewed as a complete bust. In 2011, Harbaugh's first year, they hosted the NFCCG. They went to the NFCCG in his first 3 years and won one of them.
I'm not understanding why people think he sucks at coaching. I'm gonna need a hell of a lot better of an explanation than "hurr durr he's overpaid".

I've said this before, if you want to criticize him then do it for last year. He had a roster full of upperclassman and he blew it. This team is full of freshman and sophomores, it was always going to be a rebuilding year. I don't think UM wins a big 10 title till 2019.

rocket31 is taking a risk right now. He could be the butt of a lot of jokes on here around 2019/2020 if Harbaugh takes us to the promise land

quote:Sure, but it's quick and easy, and I can quickly see a school's historical SRS dating back to 1800s.
honeslty man, im not sure why youre looking at SRS, its a pretty elementary evaluation of team strength
quote:If there is an easy way to access it, I would be happy to use a difference metric.
your posts would be much more valuable if they were S&P
quote:Well Kelly is grossly underpaid, 65th according to this ranking:
also Harbaugh makes 2x as much as BK so im not really understanding the comparison.
NCAA Football Coaches Salaries
But obviously the simple economics of it is that Harbaugh is a successful NFL coach so whereas ND and UM are top tier programs, the only real upward competition in the market would be the NFL, and Harbaugh is unique in that capacity.
quote:If you're only looking at the coaches' value on the field, but of course the market is far more than just that, and as I said above, Harbaugh is unique with his NFL success.
if anything, its proving that JH is vastly overpaid

Despite the fact that most all Notre Dame fans have wanted to run Kelly out of town the last few years.
No coach at ND should be out of the Top 32...because there's basically only 32 teams that can ever win the Natty and given year.

quote:OK. So it took a little more time, but I was able to find the S&P+ rankings for the same years I ran the SRS for Harbaugh:
your posts would be much more valuable if they were S&P
Stanford
Year S&P+ Margin Rank
2006 -8.7 94th
2007 -2.7 71st (Harbaugh's first year)
2008 +3.9 45th
2009 +7.9 30th (Luck's freshman year)
2010 +20.2 6th (Harbaugh's last year)
2011 +16.6 9th (Luck's last year)
Michigan
Year S&P+ Margin Rank
2014 +5.8 48th
2015 +20.5 5th (Harbaugh's first year)
2016 +26.8 3rd
2017 +9.0 27th
So a average S&P+ of 7.33 at Stanford, 18.77 at UM, and 12.23 overall, with a 16.88 over his last 5 seasons as a CFB coach. In addition, it improved by 6.0 in his first year at Stanford and 14.7 in his first year at UM.
