I don't think it is the same. basketball is played more frequently, and televised more frequently. the disinterest in soccer is on the same level as the popularity. Meaning if you don't care about it, you really don't care about it. It's not like you flip on Sportscenter on a random night and see Rondaldo kicking a goal. "Oh hey look its that rondaldo guy!!!" that just doesnt happen.

You got us all. Troll of the night award. Congrats... you win!!!

It was an Andy Kaufman post. He really made you believe he was crazy.

SportsCenter is an American show. Soccer is the #4 or #5 most popular sport overall in the US.

AGAIN, YOU ARE NOT THE WORLD.

the NBA is broadcasted in 215 countries.

Yep. Not to mention nearly every La Liga game, every Champions League game and probably some Copa del Rey games will be televised too. I'm talking just American TV too.

The heyday of NBA defense was early '90s to early 2000s. You realize that, right?

Ronaldo will play roughly 50-60 games of consequence each year.

All of those games are televized in Spain, which is where his team club team plays, and a mulitude of other nations across the world. Of course, his games for Portugal, his national team, are broadcast in Portugal and a shite ton of other countries. It is undoubtedly worldwide if it is a major tournament or they are playing Barcelona.

By the way, Ronaldo is all over ESPN during the month of June. I have seen a few of his goals on Sportscenter Top Plays and seen soccer highlights on ESPN.

And soccer is broadcasted, on bigger channels, in more countries in the world.

Again, look up the ratings of each, and get back to me. It's no comparison.

Alright guys, everyone step down. If it's not coming on ESPN at primetime in the U.S. on ESPN, or in the afternoon on WGN, it's not happening according to big Les here.

the ratings are aided by the infrequency of important matches. That's fairly clear.

The in-home television coverage of the competition reached over 3.2 billion people around the world, or 46.4 per cent of the global population, based on viewers watching a minimum of over one minute of coverage.

quote:

Based on viewers watching a minimum of 20 consecutive minutes of coverage, the 2010 tournament reached nearly a third of the world population with 2.2 billion viewers, or three per cent higher than in 2006, according to data compiled by KantarSport on behalf of FIFA. The average in-home global audience for each match was 188.4 million, up six per cent on 2006, while the highest average audience measured was for the final at 530.9 million, up five per cent on 2006.

quote:

Unsurprisingly the competition’s most-watched match was the final between Spain and the Netherlands, which reached 619.7 million in-home viewers based on those watching at least 20 consecutive minutes of coverage. This figure, however, rises to 909.6 million viewers based on watching over one minute and is likely to have surpassed one billion when out-of-home viewers are included. Indeed, all the figures cited do not include people watching out-of-home at the FIFA Fan Fests and other public viewing venues, as well as in pubs, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, or even online and via mobile handsets.

10

And this is in a country that does not care about soccer.

The number probably rises to like 20-25 or so if you count ESPN3.
