So Europe and Hispanic nations aren't part of this world?

You fricking idiot. Seriously. South Korea buys more copies of FIFA than the United States buys Madden. The two biggest sports superstars in the world are Messi and Ronaldo

Social rank is:

quote:

Ronaldo
Messi
Beckham
Lebron

Which is what I would go by. That list ranks most "powerful" which is something I don't think translates to "biggest superstar in the world." Cristiano tops the social rank which is the closest I would consider to "biggest superstar athlete in the world." Just my opinion.

I don't think basketball stars are generally worldwide icons with the exception of Jordan. Lebron James doesn't even live in the same universe of worldwide fame that Tiger Woods does or some international soccer stars do. I have met people from other English speaking countries that didn't know who Lebron James was.

I'm just basing this off of some recent travel that I did and met a bajillion people. I am a very curious person and love sports. Lebron James is not anywhere near as famous as Tiger Woods worldwide. I'd bet the mortgage on it. Tiger reached the status of guys like Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Pele, etc. Lebron isn't there.

I work in rural Mozambique during my summers. They know 4 international athletes. Ronaldo, Messi, Kobe, Lebron. The 2 biggest sports they play are soccer and basketball. Its odd because they all have Africa's soccer star jereys (Drogba, Eto'o, Essien, etc.) but don't know who they are.

Well maybe in third world countries. I haven't been to any aside from Mexico. But in other first world countries throughout the world, the NBA was pretty big 10 years ago -- and that was during a relatively weak era of basketball.

Becks is really big too but more for being a model. Ronaldo might be bigger than Messi because he's half model and half superstar. In my opinion, Messi is amazing. He makes the other 10 guys better and he doesn't have that same ego. All three are huge worldwide. Becks might be the most popular because somehow even the US loves him.

Tiger has lost a lot. NBA players are still up there because basketball has become so big in places like Eastern Europe and China. They have a lot of fans worldwide so the gap isn't that huge but I think it is still sizable.

random Austrailian: better chance of knowing Lebron or Mossi?

False. It conveys the power soccer has throughout the world. Cristiano Ronaldo has almost 11 million followers. Aside from Kaka, a Brazilian soccer phenom, the next closest athlete is Shaq with 5.8M. The next highest active athlete is Lebron with 5M.
