Damn going by that list the NBA players are doing good since they ONLY play in ONE country, don't live in other countries, etc. People in Europe, Asia, etc don't get the chance to see pro basketball players from the U.S. in person unless it's the Olympics. Now if we had the NBA playing in Europe a few times a month I promise you Lebron, Kobe, Rose, Howard etc would sky rocket to the top of that list.

That's a fair analysis, but think about it this way. The NBA is the best basketball league in the world with the most money. So it's marketed worldwide and its players become more recognizable worldwide.

Same with the big soccer leagues. The teams in the EPL and La Liga have players from all over the world because they are the best leagues with the most money. In fact, the EPL actually had a vote a couple years ago on whether or not they would play league games in America and Asia (it was voted down). Despite that, big clubs tour around America and Asia every summer.

The point is, I think your wrong to assume that NBA games in Europe would shoot their players to the top of popularity lists. The European soccer giants are reaching out to worldwide audiences as much as American leagues are. That's why pro soccer is the 2nd most popular sport in America amongst 12-24 year olds, according to ESPN.

Interesting stuff. Shows that baseball is in fact declining in popularity among younger audiences, unfortunately.

NBA,NFL, and MLB players

cultish, hobbyish, these sports have a cultish or hobbyist type following outside of the US.

you place too much importance on the relative weight of US media. retransmission/broadcast of something =/= popular.

Soccer is part of life's fabric outside of the US.

BTW, that cut and paste list is incorrect, Messi should be 1, maybe 2.

Yep, he's almost half way to Kaka's amount of followers. So he's about 6 million behind. But he's the biggest superstar athlete in the world.
