He already has that absurd signing bonus in his bank account though.

They took his signing bonus back? I missed that part.

Tell that to Brett Favre. It all goes into being prepared to play on Sunday. Teams really don't care how awesome you tear it up in practice or team meetings, if you suck during games on Sunday you are worthless.

No he doesn't.

If player x is drafted by the saints and offer him y dollars his choices are taking that, negotiating, or not playing football. He can't say "Ok I think the pats are willing to pay me more so I'm going to talk to them"

I am not always in favor of the players when trying to renegotiate, but I am in favor of them being allowed to do it. Until the contracts are 100% guaranteed I will be in favor of the ability to renegotiate.

And every year ESPN does a piece on how Favre's timing is off early in the season.

How many championships has Brett won since skipping the offseasons?

Zero, still collected a fat paycheck though. I'm not saying practice doesn't make a guy better, but if guy A plays really well and practices shitty, and guy B practices really well and plays shitty, guy A is going to play on Sunday. Therefore, what you do on Sunday is all that really matters.

If Guy B practices shitty and plays shitty he's going to get cut so practice is important. Brett Favre is an exception not the rule.

So who are these star players that are making the mega bucks and performing on sundays without putting in the blood sweat and tears in the offseason/weekly practice?

Your player A doesn't exist on a consistent basis. Brett Favre had a great year in 2009 but that's about it.

You think Brees, Brady, and Manning are blowing off camp? The best players on sunday put in a LOT of work.

Randy Moss
Brett Favre
Albert Haynesworth
Andre Johnson played several games this year in which he didn't practice during the week due to injury.
Lots of players play each week after not practicing the previous week due to injuries.

What is this in reference to? Players getting hurt and getting paid? If I get injured at my current job won't I get paid disability?

Just because you're not good at your job doesn't mean you're not doing it. A crappy lawyer who loses all his cases is still doing his job.

I'll give you Moss.

Brett Favre minus 2009 has been mediocre at best. In the 3 most recent seasons in which he skipped camp he was mediocre in 2008, good in 2009 and downright bad in 2010. Not a very good example.

Albert Haynesworth got suspended without pay for being fat/out of shape/ not practicing. Not a good example. His stock has also never been lower.

Not practicing due to injury a few weeks a year is different than blowing off camp/practice.

I know, it just goes to my point that what you do on Sunday is the only thing that matters.

No shite.

It just seems like your saying that what you do on Sundays is not directly related to what you do in practice during the week and the offseason.

Except for a handful of players the people performing on sundays got on the field by what they did in practice.

Aside from a couple of positions, starting spots rosters are not finalized until the first game.

Fair enough, but doesn't it also happen that sometimes owners can get parts of signing bonuses back? Didn't Arthur Blank get millions back from Vick when he went to prison?

Besides, signing bonuses happen in the "real" world all the time. A buddy of mine got a signing bonus right out of college to be an accountant. It wasn't $60mil, but tons more people can be accountants than can throw a football as far as JR

Jamarcus isn't doing his job, but he's still getting paid for it.

That's only because Vick broke his morals clause in his contract. If a player just gets fat and lazy and sucks at football, he gets all his money.

I'm really not against players being paid, but they're getting paid now. The players that deserve the money would still be getting paid big money under the terms the owners want. They want a rookie pay scale to prevent guys like Jamarcus from sucking a ton of money from them without proving themselves. Less money to rookies would mean more money to veterans who've proven they can play, more money in the owner's pockets, and teams wouldn't be crushed by drafting a player who turns out to be a bust.
