I just wonder why football is counted against the men's scholarships. There is nothing in the rules about it being a male only sport.

I don't think there should be rules either way about having to fund a certain amount of scholarships for either sex. The demand for the scholarships isn't there for a lot of the female sports.

Another idea is that schools could partially exempt football by turning a profit. If a school turns a profit at football, it agrees to pay federal taxes on the income and in exchange, each football scholarship will only count as a certain percentage towards Title IX compliance. The larger the profit, the bigger the exemption (so long as it is capped – the key is here is you don’t want schools claiming a profit for Title IX but not for tax purposes. You want an exemption? Pay Uncle Sam).

I think it is a clever idea but one that would be ripe with unintended consequences.

Cooking teh books would become a major past-time for athletic departments in general. When I was doing a residency at a Big 12 school they were already doing things that I considered unfair referrals of costs.

For example, their athletic department wanted an olympic sized swimming pool for their meets instead of the old pool they were using... and they packaged that new facility (among other things) into a new center that was paid for by raising mandatory student fees. There really was no justification for that IMO - an Olympic sized pool in lieu of a smaller pool is only a major improvement for the athletic department (not the 5-20 regular morning swimmers on most campuses)

It is easy to see that (in places where this is not already done) certain things like school bands would no longer be the responsibility of the athletic department, they would be foisted onto other (essentially shell) departments purely for the purpose of deceptive accounting... and the more of this type of misdirection/cheating the system you can do... the more money you are allowed to pour into athletics

Elimination of scholarship limits would mean well endowed universities would have a significant advantage over state universities. Some sports, like baseball, need more. Some sports, like football and basketball, are about right. Some sports have too many scholarships for their needs. Title IX is brought into the equation because that is when the last big adjustment was made. Enough time has passed to tweak it without throwing out the entire system.

which is why I tried to put a positive and a negative for showing a profit. Turn a profit -- get more scholarships, but pay more taxes. Balance a benefit with a demerit.

Message Posted by JJ27 I read. 225 for both men and women. Football would eat up a huge chunk of Men's scholarships. I think Title IX would be perfect if they excluded football from the equation.
Or if schools started women's football. Could be good springtime fun.

Great stuff Baloo. I'm not smart enough to know whether or not t would work, but it's definitely intriguing.

authority likes control.

that's about it from my point of view.

you see, if you allowed colleges to decide for themselves where to spend their scholarships, a school could decide to have a premier track team, for example. no basketball team, no baseball team, but premier in track. Some such. volley ball.
whatever.
I think that would be cool. Michigan Tech could offer 45 hockey scholarships.
