The nfl doesn't always have the best football minds it's more of a fraternity that's why. There are a lot of college coaches who are better but didn't come up through the NFL ranks so you get situations like Cleveland and Frisco constantly around the league. NBA is the same way they'd rather have coaches who know the players than a real football coach.

I think the problem on that play started with the formation. Ryan is in the shotgun and the RB is lined up in front of him and to his right. They've used that formation in the past and I'm sure they have some sort of run out of it but they pretty much took away any threat of the run by the formation.
