I played with a buddy the other day who had a much thicker grip on his driver than I have. I used his club for one hole and hit an absolute bomb. It got me thinking that perhaps I should change my grip on my driver to something thicker.

Now, I know most of the time grip thickness (excluding putters) only comes into play for guys with smaller or larger than normal hands. I would say I have slightly larger than normal hands since I am 6' 2". However, I grip my driver very tight and while I probably hit 50% of my fairways, I have been known to hook the shite out of it if the club moves in my backswing. His thicker grip felt a bit more comfortable, but before I go replacing my grips, I wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience or any insight.

larger grip means you're not holding the club as tight, right?

What did you used before? Why did you make the change?

Not on my clubs, but I've put thicker and thinner combinations of grips and tapes on clubs

I've always used stock grips but I put a diamana blueboard on a Burner driver and liked soft feel of that grip. Haven't looked back

I put a few layers of tape under my grips but don't use thick grips.

I do this as well. I feel like it takes some of the wrist action out

Not necessarily.

Thicker grip can help prevent a hook. It prevents the hands from turning over the clubface

I actually downsized my grips on my irons because the smaller grip felt better and fit my hands better. My ball striking has improved.

I have oversize grips on all my clubs. I find it easier to draw or cut a shot as needed with larger grips.
