Native New Orleanian that went to LSU:

Saints
LSU 2003 (It's close though)
LSU 2007

I will say I don't know if the Saints was the most fun though. Definitely more meaningful/special. And I'd agree with SFP the Final Four run is pretty underrated and I'm not a huge basketball guy.

I think this meant more to saints fans than 2003 meant to the lsu only fan.

i think after LSU's run of dominance from 2005-2007, we forget how much it really meant to us

we've grown to expect national title-level play

i mean honestly, the saints were 1 game away from the super bowl in 2006. before 2003, when was the last time LSU sniffed the title game?

I'll never give John Brady more credit for anything than the job they did on Reddick. It wasn't just stick Temple on him and let him shut him down.

i was thinking about this. Outside of 01, LSU was a disaster and 03 was just a complete shock.

This Saints season was a perfect boiling point it seemed, and they really dominated during the regular season.

LSU's run in 2003 was magical, and the futility was a lot longer than the saints' futility

lsu "futility" included a lot of successful seasons whereas saints futility was practically 40 years of severe suckage with fleeting moments of hope. I don't really think their futility is comparable - saints have the market cornered.

I was living in Phx then. It snowed at my house that day. With thunder and lightening.

It was a really fricked up day.

there is no LSU equivalent to the cha-ching year when we started out 7-0 or 8-0

since the saints have been in existence, and before 2003, these are the SEC titles of LSU football:

1970, 1986, 1988, 2001

the saints made the playoffs 6 times before this year

LSU '03= greatest

but tonite is magical- never thought it would happen, saw the Saints win the SuperBowl with my grandparents (85 yrs old), they were Saints season ticket holders for 41 years!

4 Generations of Saints fans saw a SuperBowl win.

The futility was a lot longer than the Saints futility? 1959-2003..... Looks like 44 years to me.

It's not about the number of years it's about relative success and perception. Saints glimpses of the playoffs were pretty much that until 2006. Also the saints were known in the league for their futility. But lsu had successful seasons in the 40 years prior to 2003.

I'd say the 2003 NC was a bigger deal to most people in Louisiana for the simple fact that it was the first time Louisiana won a major football championship in 45 years.

I think this Super Bowl victory is bigger for the franchise than the NC was for LSU since LSU had one before that 2003 one, but I think because of how College football is set up and the fact of HOW we got into that game is what made it so special, and like SFP said, we were big time underdogs in that game.

The honest greatest feeling for me as a sports fan was the 2001 SEC championship. I'd been an LSU fan my entire life and was in my last year of undergrad. LSU was 4-7 and 3-8 my first 2 years of college, and sports was an escape from a horrific 9/11 that year. It is much like the 2006 season for the Saints. Had we won it that year, I honestly think the Super Bowl would've meant even MORE than it does today.

When people asked this question 2 years ago and I WAS a SAINTS fan I always said a Super Bowl win is better than a BCS National Title and I still feel that way. The reason why is because it's actually a playoff, no polls, no biased voters, no damn computers determining who plays for a title, etc.

Plus the Super Bowl is one of the most popular events in American sports. People that aren't fans of both teams watch the game, buy food, have parties, etc.

Thank you. Plus when you're a little kid playing football your dream/goal is to play in the NFL/Super Bowl. A lot of these star athletes today use major schools to get to the NFL, a lot of them don't care about being loyal to their home state college teams. They want the quickest route to the NFL.
