Flashback to the 1st BCS Standings of 2007 - The craziest season in CFB history
Posted on 10/16/15 at 2:28 pm
Posted on 10/16/15 at 2:28 pm
Most of you remember this season well. It was appropriately dubbed "The Year of the Upset" - a season in which 13 unranked teams beat Top 5 teams and the #2 ranked team was beaten 7 times. However, I wanted to take a closer look at 7 teams that reached levels in 2007 that they may never reach again:
Boston College
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #2 on October 21st
Record Since: 51-52 (.495)
Coaches Since: Jeff Jagodzinski 07-08, Frank Spaziani 09-12, Steve Addazio 13-Present
Best Win Since: 37-31 vs. #9 USC in 2014
Worst Loss Since: 3-0 v Wake Forest last week (spiked the ball on the 1 yard line with no time left)
Where Are They Now: Jeff Jagodzinski was a on pace to move to greener pastures after going 20-8 in two seasons at BC, but he became a bit too anxious and interviewed for the NY Jets opening in 2008 after being explicitly told not to do so by the BC AD. He was fired a day after the interview and missed out on the Jets job as well. He was hired as the Tampa Bay Bucs OC in 2008, but was fired after the 3rd preseason game due to his struggles getting the plays called in time. He eventually found himself as the HC for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL, but was fired after a year there. He was a WR coach for Ave Marie University in 2012 and is now the OC at Georgia State.
University of South Florida
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #2 on October 14th
Record Since: 43-56 (.434)
Coaches Since: Jim Leavitt 07-09, Skip Holtz 10-12, Willie Taggart 13-Present
Best Win Since: 23-20 @ #16 Notre Dame in 2011
Worst Loss Since: 53-21 vs. McNeese State in 2013
Where Are They Now: Matt Grothe led the Bulls' offense from 2006-2009. He passed for 8,700 yards and rushed for 2,200 while scoring 75 total TDs in his career. His 2009 senior season was cut short due to an ACL tear and he went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has bounced around the UFL, CFL, and Arena League ever since.
California
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #2 on October 7th
Record Since: 45-56 (.446)
Coaches Since: Jeff Tedford 07-12, Sonny Dykes 13-Present
Best Win Since: 43-17 vs #25 UCLA in 2012
Worst Loss Since: Consecutive weeks while ranked #6 and #24 in 2009 - 42-3 @ unranked Oregon and 30-3 vs. #7 USC
Where Are They Now: After Tedford was fired in 2012, he took a year off before being hired as the Tampa Bay Bucs OC in 2013. Unfortunately he underwent heart surgery after the 3rd preseason game and was never able to get back to full-strength with the team, eventually being released at the end of the season. He has since taken over as the HC of the BC Lions and will be starting his first season there this year.
University of Virginia
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #15 on October 21st
Record Since: 35-61 (.365)
Coaches Since: Al Groh 07-09, Mike London 10-Present
Best Win Since: 48-0 @ Miami in 2007
Worst Loss Since: 26-14 vs. William & Mary in 2009
Where Are They Now: Mike London was the DC for the 2007 Virginia squad, and after coaching at Richmond during 2008-2009, he returned to take the HC job at Virginia. Surprisingly, Mike London is still the head coach at Virginia. He has gone 24-42 in his time there, including 11-30 in conference and only 1 winning season back in 2011. As a result, Mike London can find himself on the top of any list discussing current coaches most likely to get fired.
University of Kansas
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #2 on November 8th
Record Since: 28-66 (.283)
Coaches Since: Mark Mangino 07-09, Turner Gill 10-11, Charlie Weis 12-14, Clint Bowen 14, David Beaty 15-Present
Best Win Since: 24-21 vs #5 Virginia Tech as #8 Kansas wins the 2008 Orange Bowl
Worst Loss Since: 6-3 vs North Dakota State in 2010 (this was back when losing to NDSU was improbable)
Where Are They Now: Todd Reesing led a relatively potent Jayhawks offense in 2007, throwing for 33 TDs and only 7 INTs. For his career he threw for 11,200 yards and 90 TDs while rushing for another 650 yards and 15 TDs. Reesing went undrafted in 2010 and spent two weeks on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders squad before being cut. He now lives in Kansas City and occasionally provides color commentary for the Jayhawks Network.
University of Kentucky
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #7 on October 14th
Record Since: 40-59 (.404)
Coaches Since: Rich Brooks 07-09, Joker Phillips 10-12, Mark Stoops 13-Present
Best Win Since: 34-27 @ Georgia in 2009
Worst Loss Since: 40-0 vs. Vanderbilt in 2012
Where Are They Now: Andre Woodson was one of the most prolific passers in SEC history. In fact, Woodson broke Danny Wuerffel's single season passing TD record in 2007 with 40 TDs. He also holds the NCAA record for consecutive pass attempts without an INT at 325 attempts. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Giants, and spent time on the practice squad for the Giants and the Redskins in 2008-2009. He played one year for the Hartford Colonials of the UFL in 2010, and then returned to UK as a GA for the 2011-2012 seasons. In 2013 he took a position as the WR coach at Morehead State, and he remains there today.
West Virginia
Highest BCS/AP Ranking: #2 on November 25th
Record Since: 59-38 (.608)
Coaches Since: Rich Rodriguez 07, Bill Stewart 07-10, Dana Holgorsen 11-Present
Best Win Since: 70-33 over #14 Clemson as #23 WVU wins the 2012 Orange Bowl
Worst Loss Since: 13-9 vs. unranked Pittsburgh in 2007 (likely the worst loss in program history considering the circumstances)
Where Are They Now: Noel Devine came to WVU as the #6 prospect in the country and a YouTube sensation with his dazzling highlight videos. He contributed right away for the Mountaineers in 2007, and became a starter for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He was a dynamic player, but he chose to return for his senior year in 2010 rather than opt for the NFL Draft, and that decision proved costly. Although he finished his career with over 5000 yards from scrimmage and 31 TDs, injuries plagued him throughout 2010 and he went undrafted in the 2011 draft. He played for the Omaha Nighthawks in the UFL in 2011 before moving on to the Montreal Alouettes in 2012. Fumbles were a major issue for Devine and he was released after the 2013 season. He is now a member of the Edmonton Eskimos.
I'm never quite sure if the 2007 season was great for CFB, or if it was an abomination - Kansas was the only Power 5 school to finish with less than 2 losses. We haven't seen that level of parity since, although this season is shaping up to be more competitive than most. I don't believe we'll ever see a more diverse Top 25 than what the BCS rolled out for the first standings that year, and it is even more incredible in hindsight considering how far most of these teams have fallen.

The big east was the second best conference that year. People can laugh all they want but the Thursday game always had big bcs implications and was always an awesome game.
It was a deep conference and those teams could've beaten any team in the nation
stafford and Moreno were frauds. Georgia was such a fraud that year.

I don't believe it was 2007, but what year were Louisville and Rutgers both in the Top 5 at different times?

every year since then. Seriously, they stomped on a field and ESPN had such wood for them. That's when I was way too into sports.

I'm pretty sure the expectations were lowered at least in 2010.

Rutgers was that year I think after beating south Florida
I don't know the conference was nuts that year
Bac
USF
Rutgers
WV
And Pitt with a huge upset at the end of the year. Uconn was also good in 07

I remember Matt Ryan & Boston College that year
They weren't that good, but there was one game where they were still unbeaten and losing to VT by 13 points with 2 minutes left. They scored, got the onside kick, scored again, and won. Houdini act
Kansas was a beneficiary of a bad schedule. They played a Baylor-like non conference, and missed the 3 best teams from the Big 12 South. I want to say they didn't beat a ranked team until Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
West Virginia shite the bed, plain and simple. Although the refs did everything in their power to rig that last game vs. Pitt. That was an officiating travesty and glad karma got the best of them.

They were an unranked team entering that game, so no.

That year had the biggest South Carolina-Kentucky game ever.
.....And it was on a Thursday.

Kansas State may have been ranked at the time they played them. Mizzou was a Top 5 team when they played them.

Must've been the next year. I remember how Rutgers d blitzed all night and ray rice pounded the rock.
Maybe it was Boston college they upset. I can't remember other than the Thursday night games were crazy and that the big east was bad arse.

what are you so upset about, simply because people quesiton if we could have beaten LSU?
We had 2 bad losses (as did lsu) then got as hot as anyoen else in the country. Not sure why we were "frauds".

Pitt beat them up with their front 7. Their LBs were just shutting every option play down like it was nothing

What part of that post makes you think I'm upset. Are you the psycho who wished for me and my family to all die in a car wreck because I said people were losing perspective with sports injuries? Talk about upset.

2006 was the year with the crazy Thursday night Big East games. Specifically the one where Rutgers got to re-kick the field goal
